Henry Hunter Shepherd, Jr. Obituary

July 8, 1938 – April 18, 2024

Henry Hunter Shepherd, Jr., of Needham, MA, passed away on April 18, 2024. He is survived by Joyce Shepherd, his loving wife of 58 years, and by his children, Julie (Matthew) Emery and Andrew (Kari) Shepherd. He is also survived by five grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard.

Shep was born on July 8, 1938, to Henry and Marjorie Shepherd, in Evanston, Illinois. He graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL, in 1956. He graduated with a Bachelors’ Degree in Business from the University of Maine in 1961, and a Masters’ Degree in Business from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Henry was a member of the ROTC while an undergraduate and went on to serve in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Hood, TX. After his service in the military, Henry was a career salesman, most recently selling advertising/sales incentives.

Over the years, Henry and his family lived in Melrose, MA; Dover, MA; Ridgewood, NJ; and Westwood, MA. Henry and Joyce were most recently residents at North Hill in Needham, MA, where they made many new friends and lived life to the fullest. They also built a home in Cape Porpoise, enjoying beautiful Maine summers there with family.

Henry was always active in community service. He had leadership roles in the Parish of the Good Shepherd in Waban, MA, and St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Dover, MA. He was also a member of St. Ann’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport, ME. Henry regularly volunteered with the Home for Little Wanderers and the St. John’s soup kitchen in Boston.

Henry loved the game of golf and “a good walk spoiled.” He was a member of the Bay State Seniors Golf Association, Dedham Country and Polo Club, and Cape Arundel Golf Club, where he enjoyed nature and time with his friends and family. He gave back to the game and community through the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund and the USGA.
