Carol Hopkins Brown

Carol Hopkins Brown, formerly of Weston, died peacefully at her home at North Hill in Needham.  She was 90. The beloved wife for over 60 years of the late Robert Davis Brown, she is survived by her three sons, Doug and his wife Jeanne of La Grange, IL, Steve and his wife Lisa of Weston, and Nat of Newton, as well as by her sister Jeri Smallwood and her husband Dick of Palo Alto, CA.  She is also survived by grandchildren Renée, Andy, Sam, Phillip, Riley and Janet.  

Carol grew up in Montclair, NJ and spent many summers at Saltaire on Fire Island, NY.  She attended Smith College.  After college she worked as a third grade teacher.  In 1952 she met Bob Brown and they were married in 1953.  Carol and Bob had three boys and spent most of the next 18 years in West Hartford, CT where they made lifelong friends and spent many happy days playing tennis at the Hartford Tennis Club.  In 1971 they moved to Weston, where they remained for 35 years until moving to North Hill in 2006.

Carol and Bob enjoyed weekends with other families hiking to the AMC huts in New Hampshire and later enjoyed lifelong learning through many Elder Hostel trips, including trips with their grandchildren.  They loved Weston and were active in keeping it an open and welcoming town through work with the schools, METCO and affordable housing projects.

After raising her three boys, Carol returned to work with positions at Waltham Hospital and Digital Equipment Corporation.

Above all, Carol will be remembered for being a great friend who always found others more interesting than herself.  She loved to meet new people and to learn more about the lives and accomplishments of those around her. Her life was one of gratitude and of sharing small kindnesses. At North Hill, Carol was the person who knew almost everyone, staff and residents alike.

Residents and staff of North Hill are invited to gather at a reception to remember Carol on Thursday, January 3rd at 4 pm in the Red Room.

A Celebration of Carol’s life will be held in the Chapel at the First Parish Church of Weston, 349 Boston Post Rd, Weston, on Friday, January 4th at 10:30am. A Reception will follow at the church.
