Michael Mulcahy Obituary

Michael A. “Mick” Mulcahy, 90, of Jamaica Plain passed away August 7, 2018.  Mick loved life and lived his life to its fullest.  He was always ready for a song, a cup of tea, a “small” bite to eat or a debate on the current state of union. 

Mick’s first love was his homeland, County Waterford, Ireland.  At the age of 18 Mick emigrated from Ireland to England, earning his nursing degree at Whipps Cross Hospital where he met his best girl, Patricia (Hennessy) Mulcahy.  Mick and his bride immigrated to the US and settled in Jamaica Plain where they raised their eight children. Mick began his nursing career at McLean Hospital, then on to Saint Elizabeth’s. He rose through the ranks to become the first male director of nursing at Cardinal Cushing Hospital, where he also served as Assistant Administrator  Mick ended his nursing career at the V.A. Hospital in his home town of Jamaica Plain.

Mick was a lifelong parishioner and Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Faulkner Hospital.  Mick was an energetic community activist and a longtime board member of the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corp. where he concentrated on the economic development, affordable housing, and community organizing in Jamaica Plain. 

Mick was predeceased in death by his wife, Patricia (Hennessy) Mulcahy.  Loving father of  children, Bridget Landry and her husband Michael of Longmeadow, John Mulcahy and his wife Sharon of Blackstone, Helena Moylan and her husband Stephen of East Bridgewater,  Elizabeth Mulcahy of Jamaica Plain, Mary Eaton and her husband Laurence “Skip” Eaton of Needham, Maurice Mulcahy and his wife Michelle of Columbus, OH, Sheila Mulcahy and her husband Francis Cain of Apopka, FL and Joseph Mulcahy of Jamaica Plain, devoted grandfather to Siobhan Lydon, Steven Moylan, Jr, Daniel Moylan, Erin Mulcahy, Sean Mulcahy, Catherine Landry, Philip Landry, III, Michael and Brendan Eaton, Kiera Mulcahy and Rory Cain.  Great grandfather to Orion Mulcahy, Brynn Lydon, Jack Lydon, Cora Lydon, Gavin Moylan, Paisley Moylan, Owen Moylan and Zack Moylan.  He is survived by his sisters, Maryellen Wilkinson of Yorkshire England, Eileen Barry and Anne Conroy of Bexleyheath, England and his brother, Edward Mulcahy of Sneem, Ireland.

Visiting hours in the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave, Needham, on Monday, August 13th from 4-7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 14 Montebello Rd, Jamaica Plain on Tuesday August 14th at 10 am. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mick’s name may be made to Our Lady of  Lourdes Church, 97 South St, Jamaica Plain MA 02130.
