Alfred Cannon Woodcock

Alfred Cannon Woodcock died on May 3, 2022.  

Born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1938, he attended The Asheville School and then Yale College, where he graduated in 1960.  He received an MBA with a major in marketing from Northwestern University in 1963.  He then embarked on a career with advertising agencies, which took him and his family to Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Atlanta, and Cleveland (starting in 1975).  He was in account management for clients Procter and Gamble, Coca-Cola, Standard Oil of Ohio, and others.  In Cleveland, he was with Marschalk Advertising, then a part of the Interpublic Group of Companies.

The Woodcock family lived in Shaker Heights and at Shaker Square.  They loved Cleveland.   Al was a volunteer at University Hospitals for 20+ years, working in pre-operation holding, emergency, and the cardiac floor, where he visited and explained to patients the advantages of cardiac rehab—he spoke from experience. Al was also known around town as a dealer in old paper goods:  photographs, maps, for example, and especially View-Masters.   He was a member of Communion of Saints Parish.

Hiking was one of Al’s great pleasures, as was photography.  The two interests came together in many striking photographs of the outdoors that Al produced—from vast panoramas to the smallest mushrooms .  Travels inspired pictures too, well crafted and thought provoking.

Maggy and Al moved to Massachusetts in 2015 to be near their daughter and her family.  They lived happily at North Hill Retirement Community in Needham.  Al leaves Maggy, his wife of 59 years; his daughter Heather Woodcock, his son-in-law Daniel G. Monahan, and grandchildren Silas and Louisa, all of Cambridge, Massachusetts; his sister-in-law Nancy Woodcock, her daughters Jackie, Colleen and Elizabeth, and their children, all of London, England.

A family service will be held at historic Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
