Alice M. (Doherty) Murphy, of Plymouth and St. Petersburg FL formerly of Newton Highlands, died on Sun Aug 14, 2011 at Golden Living Center/Chetwynde in West Newton. She was 86.
Born and raised in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston, Alice graduated from Mission High and attended Burdette Business School. During WW II she worked at the Navy yard in Quincy and later for New England Telephone. For many years Alice worked as a function manager at 1200 Beacon in Boston, the Wayside Inn in Sudbury and the Holiday Inn in Waltham. She had volunteered with the Gray Ladies, visiting veterans at the VA Hospital in West Roxbury and had hand sewn vestments for Sacred Heart Church in Newton Centre while Bishop McKenzie was in residence there.
Alice is the wife of the late Jeremiah “Jerry” Murphy, and is survived by her son Glenn E. Murphy and his wife Patricia Cashen-Murphy and her granddaughter Kerry Cashen-Murphy all of West Newton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Sat Aug 27 at 10:30 AM in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Washington St. Newton, followed by interment at Newton Cemetery. Visiting hours are omitted.
In lieu of flowers memorials in Alice’s name may be made to North Shore Hospice 25 Sylvan St. Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
