Allen Wilcox Obituary

Allen Freile Wilcox, a lifetime resident of Needham, MA passed away at his home on June 27, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was 86. He was the beloved husband for 55 years to the late Judith Wilcox prior to her passing in 2020.

Allen began his early education at Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Boston, MA before attending Fessenden School in Newton, and Belmont Hill School in Belmont. He then attended classes at Gallaudet College. He was well-known for a hands-on education that he applied to raise his two sons to be jacks-of-all-trades.

Allen was an avid gardener who spent many days pruning rhododendrons, azaleas, andromedas, kalmias and dogwood trees up to the day he passed. He shared his love for nature and the outdoors with his two sons as he would scoop them up and take them out for many endeavors all over New England since they were very young. Fond memories sailing his vintage sailfish dinghy, ice skating, fishing, camping, skiing, canoeing, and cross-country skiing, truly inspired them to continue to enjoy outdoor adventures on a regular basis.

Allen was a proud descendant of the Middletown First Settlers of Connecticut (1650) and the 8th great-grandson of John Wilcox, one of the original proprietors of Hartford, Connecticut in 1635.

Allen is survived by his two sons: John of Needham, MA and David of Frederick, MD, and three grandchildren: Sierra, Keanu, and Tahoe Herzig-Wilcox all of Maryland. Allen was predeceased by his brother, Francis Wilcox, and two sisters, Mary Stuntzner and Jean Batson; and parents: Francis Parson Wilcox and Marion Freile Wilcox.

A private service for his family will be held at the Needham Cemetery
