Anita Evelyn Barickman Roberts,86, of Providence,RI,(resident most of her life in Newton,Massachusetts), died Friday, September 5, 2025 in Providence, RI. She was the daughter of Evelyn Beatrice Hickman Barickman and Albert Melvin Barickman.
She was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on November 22, 1938. She was educated in the Missouri public schools.
She was married in 1960 to George Wayne Roberts, who preceded her in death.
She attended TCU in Fort Worth, Texas where she met her future husband, George. She graduated from two universities, Simmons in Boston, and Lesley in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
She taught English, Journalism, and Languages Arts at the American Cooperative School in La Paz, Bolivia in '67-'68. She later taught at Warren and Meadowbrook Junior High for many years in Newton where she had a lasting impact with her students.
She traveled the world with George to many places in America and to 12 different countries. Her favorite memories were trips to England, traveling down the Nile River in Egypt and riding on a camel.
In her journal she wrote, " In 1968 at Easter George and I and a few friends took a boat across Lake Titicaca, Bolivia to Peru. We camped outside at the deserted ruins of Machu Pichu and watched the mist rose from the Urabama below us. We stayed in thatched dwellings, and mingled with llamas."
She loved reading all kinds of books. She wrote many poems and published two books of her works:
Between the Light and Shadows a Journey of Love, and later A Time of Hope Coaxing Flame.
She enjoyed going to church. She loved playing Scabble, sitting on the deck watching and identifying various birds, tending her garden, caring for her dogs, and chatting with her Aunt Gloria Jean Hollandsworth, and caring for her grandson, George.
She is preceded in death by her husband George, her parents Albert Melvin Barickman and Evelyn Beatrice Hickman Barickman, her brother Melvin David Barickman, and her nephew Mark Stephen Barickman.
She is survived by her brother Richard Bruce Barickman (Joan), sons Jon Kevin Roberts, George Brian Roberts
(Julian J. Garcia Roberts), her grandson, George Wilfredo Roberts, Aunt Gloria Jean Hollandsworth, and her beloved beagle mix dog, Caroline, many nephews and nieces.
Funeral Services at the First Baptist Church of Newton Centre, (cor. of Beacon and Centre st.) on Friday September 12, at 11am. Interment will take place in the Newton Cemetery.
