Anne Mortimer-Maddox “Dusty” died on November 7th in Boston, Massachusetts, from Alzheimer’s disease.
Dusty was born in Providence and grew up in Barrington, RI and Great Barrington, MA. She had a twin—Joan—and a younger sister Mary. Her father was an Episcopal minister from Lancashire in England, and her mother had come to America from Austria-Hungary as a young girl. Dusty attended Swarthmore and was an art teacher in Connecticut briefly before moving to New York in the 1950s.
Dusty was a devoted resident of New York’s Greenwich Village for most of her life, visiting her sister Joan in Maine in the summer.
Her great career joy was as a longtime member and eventual doyenne of the fact checking department at the New Yorker Magazine, on 43rd Street in Manhattan. She was beloved at the magazine, and many staff there remember her taking an interest and shepherding them through their early days.
In 2019 she moved up to Boston.
Dusty is survived by her twin sister, Joan Maxwfield of Palm Desert, CA.
