Anthony L. “Tony” Penzo of Plymouth, formerly of Newton and Quincy, passed away suddenly on April 28, 2024.
He was the son of the late Mickele and Rose Penzo, brother of Vincent Penzo and his spouse Mary, sisters Mary Torchetti and Roseanne Plath and her spouse Tom. He was predeceased by brothers Louis (Anna), Frank (Debbie), and sister Grace (Walter) Boyne. He was the beloved husband of 57 years of Mary J (Kerr), devoted father of Michael A. and spouse Jeanine, Donna M. and spouse Danny, and William R. and spouse Patricia. Grandfather of Danielle J. Penzo, Katharine and Adam Wenocur, Michael J. Penzo and Ariel Chu, Ryan and Amy Collette, Lauryn Dickinson, William A. and Angela Penzo and great-grandfather of Sean, Claire, and Taylor. Tony was also uncle to 31 nieces and nephews, as well as dozens of grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
Tony was a Korean War Navy veteran and was an officer of the Newton Police Department for 36 years, including 30 in the traffic bureau assisting members of the community. Upon his retirement he was recognized by both Mayor Thomas B. Concannon and Chief Frank Gorgone for his dedication and commitment to the police department and the citizens of Newton. Tony was an honest and kind man who had a positive impact on the lives of his family. He was known for his great sense of humor and would give you “the shirt of his back” to help his family and friends. Tony had a close network of friends and he and Mary were known for their Christmas Eve parties that they hosted. Tony was a member of the American Legion Post 440, and former commander of VFW Post 1538. He was an avid bowler and golfer and played well into his 80s with his buddies During the last few years of Mary’s life, Tony was her devoted caregiver, who never complained.
Funeral from the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home, 465 Centre Street, Newton, MA 02458, Friday May 3 at 9:00AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Ignatius of Loyola Church, 28 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467. Visiting hours Thursday from 4:00-8:00PM.
Interment with U.S. Navy Military Honors in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham, MA.
