Antonio Mercuri

Of West Newton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday evening, June 30, 2026, following a period of declining health. He was 88 years old.

Born on January 6, 1938, in Platania, Calabria, Italy, Antonio was the beloved son of the late Liberto and Giovanna (Mercuri) Mercuri.

In 1970, Antonio immigrated to the United States, settling in Newton, Massachusetts. He first made his home on Cottage Place and later on Auburndale Ave before moving to Cherry Place in West Newton, where he remained for many years. Through hard work, determination, and an unwavering commitment to his family, Antonio built a life defined by dedication and sacrifice. He worked as a gardener in the landscaping industry alongside several local landscaping families before proudly establishing and operating his own business, Antonio Mercuri Landscaping.

Antonio's greatest joy was his family. Everything he did was centered on providing for and spending time with his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his infectious sense of humor, his famous homemade French fries cooked with "lots of oil," his abundant tomato garden, delicious homemade sausages, and carefully crafted homemade wine. He found great happiness tending to his vegetable garden and cherished fig trees, watching classic Western movies, and gathering around the table to play Italian cards with family and friends. A devoted Boston Bruins fan, Antonio delighted in the timeless rivalry between Boston and Montreal, proudly supporting the Bruins through every memorable matchup. 

Antonio shared a loving marriage of 67 years with his beloved wife, Petronilla (Bonadio) Mercuri, who predeceased him by two years and six months to the day. He was also predeceased by his cherished grandson, Stephen Lee Mercuri; his parents, Liberto and Giovanna Mercuri; and his siblings, Pasquale, Vittorio, and Maria Mercuri.

He leaves behind his devoted and loving children, Giovannina Torcasio and her husband, Salvatore, of Newton, and Gennaro "Jerry" Mercuri and his wife, Judith, of Sharon. He is also survived by his beloved brothers, Filippo, Valentino and Luigi Mercuri, all of Argentina.

Antonio was the proud and cherished grandfather of Giovanna Forte and her husband, Justin; Marisa Talarico and her husband, Antonio; Antonio Torcasio and his wife, Kelley; Jessica Aronson and her husband, Adam; and Michelle Gerard and her husband, Colby.

Affectionately known as "Big Nonno" and "Nonno 'Curi," he adored his great-grandchildren: Isabella and Giuliana Forte; Martina, Massimo, and Mara Talarico; Liliana and Salvatore Torcasio; Matthew, Vivian, and Sophia Aronson; and Lucas Gerard. His love for them was immeasurable, and they brought him endless pride and joy.

In addition to his immediate family, Antonio leaves many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family throughout the United States, Italy, and Argentina, all of whom will deeply miss his warmth, generosity, laughter, and unwavering love.

Antonio's legacy is one of faith, family, hard work, and unconditional love. He leaves behind a family forever shaped by his strength, kindness, and example. His memory will continue to live on in every family gathering, every homegrown tomato, every shared meal, and every story told with a smile.

Family & Friends are welcome to gather to celebrate Antonio's Life and remember the love he shared with so many in his lifetime during Visiting Hours in the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home 465 Centre Street, NEWTON CORNER, on Sunday July 5th from 4pm until 7pm. and again on Monday morning July 6th at 8am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, Newton at 9:00am. Entombment will follow at Newton Cemetery Walnut Court Mausoleum.
