Barbara Dick Obituary

Barbara Katherine Dick of Needham died peacefully on Friday, February 9, 2024. She was 97 years young and known to her friends as Babs.

Barbara was born in 1926 in Victoria British Columbia, Canada. She became a US citizen in 1935 when her family moved and settled in Brookline, MA. Barbara graduated from Brookline High in 1944, then from the Bryant and Stratton School in Boston, now known as Newbury College. After graduation, Barbara was employed in the offices of the Columbian National Life Insurance Company. She was a member of the Massachusetts Christian Endeavor Union and became a delegate to the Westminster Fellowship of the National Presbyterian Churches. Barbara was a person of very strong faith and in the 1950’s, she became office manager and secretary at the Scotch Presbyterian Church on Tremont Street in Boston. The church eventually moved to Needham in 1958 and became the Needham Presbyterian Church, where Barbara continued to serve until her retirement.

Barbara loved the Red Sox and going to Fenway Park to watch and score the games; she loved traveling, stamp and coin collecting, reading and photography. She was also a terrific candlepin bowler and her nickname at the alleys was “Sharkey.”  She was a terrific cook and baker; she made a rhubarb relish for roast beef dinners that was exquisite and beyond delicious and the best chocolate chip cookies one could ever eat.

Barbara was the daughter of the late John C. and Katherine M. (MacLeod) and sister of her two older brothers, the late Frank M. and Donald C. Dick and his wife Katherine (Stewart). She was preceded in death by her two nieces both named Donna. Donna Katherine of Norwood and Donna Jean (Dillabaugh) of Swanzey, NH.

She is survived by her four nephews. James of Swanzey, NH and his children and grandchildren. Stewart and his wife Kathy of Westford, MA and his children and grandchildren. Donald and his wife Adriene of Needham, MA and their children and Gordon of Millbury, MA and his children and grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service held at Eatons Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave. Needham, MA on March 2, 2024, starting at 11AM. Barbara’s burial will be private following the service.
