Barbara Ann (Eaton) Emerson
May 8, 1930 – October 9, 2025
POCASSET, MA — Barbara Ann (Eaton) Emerson, of Pocasset and formerly of Needham, passed away on October 9 at the age of 95, at the Pond Home in Wrentham, Mass., surrounded by her loving family.
Born on May 8, 1930, in Needham, Mass, Barbara was the daughter of the late Chester and Blanche (Salt) Eaton. She spent most of her life living and working in Needham, where she and her husband, the late Thomas H. Emerson Jr., made their home and raised their family after marrying in 1950. For many years, Barbara and Tom spent summers on Cape Cod before moving to Pocasset full-time in 1998.
Known affectionately as “Nana” by family and friends alike, Barbara was the proud mother of four children: Donald Emerson of Marlboro; Susan (Wayne) Opie of Braintree; Elizabeth (Richard) Lacroix of Wrentham; and the late Jeffrey Emerson. She was the beloved grandmother of DJ Emerson, Missy (Catie) Camacho, Bob Emerson, Scott (Alicia) Opie, Brad (Megan) Opie, Kyle (Alyssa) Opie, Christopher (Emily) Lacroix, Jennifer (Tim) Lacroix-Watson, and Thomas Lacroix; and the cherished great-grandmother of Marcus and Matthew Emerson and their mother Kate Emerson, and Whitaker, Cecilia, Emerson, Delaney, Anderson, and Austin Opie. She was the beloved aunt to Ricky and Gary Eaton and Janice (Eaton) Hobaica.
In addition to her husband and son Jeffrey, Barbara was predeceased by her daughters-in-law Gail (Barton) Emerson, and Caroline (Newcomb) Foote, her granddaughter Shauna Emerson, and her brother Richard Eaton and his wife Nancy Lee.
Barbara graduated from Needham High School and Green Mountain Junior College, in Poultney, Vermont. After many happy summers spent on Cape Cod, she moved to Pocasset full-time in 1998, where she found joy in the simple pleasures of seaside living. Her favorite spot was on her porch overlooking Hen Cove and Patuisset Island, where she loved watching the boats go by and greeting the steady stream of visitors and neighbors.
A devoted matriarch, Barbara was the heart of her family—always eager to hear “what’s new?” from her children and grandchildren. She relished attending their celebrations, activities and sporting events and, keeping everyone connected through her warmth and love of family. She especially loved welcoming family and friends into her home—whether it was Christmas morning, holiday celebrations, birthdays, or summer days at the beach, Barbara’s joy came from having everyone together. Her home was a gathering place filled with laughter, good food, and the love of generations. She was always ready for a game of bridge, solitaire, croquet and even hide-and-seek. Barbara’s hobbies reflected her patient and nurturing spirit. She also enjoyed gardening, knitting, puzzles, bird watching, and—above all—spending time with her family.
She will be remembered for her kindness, her love of family, and the welcoming home she created for all who knew her.
