Brenda Gael McSweeney, an international development leader, scholar, and former senior United Nations official, passed away on March 11th after a distinguished career dedicated to global cooperation, gender equity, and sustainable development.
Born in Boston and a national of both the United States and Ireland, Dr. McSweeney earned a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College and a doctorate in development economics from The Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy. A Fulbright Scholar in Paris, she also studied at the Sorbonne and pursued advanced studies in Geneva.
Dr. McSweeney served for decades with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In 1998 she was appointed UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in India by Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Previously, she led the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme as Executive Coordinator. Her earlier UNDP assignments included service in Burkina Faso, Jamaica, the Bahamas and several Caribbean territories.
In recognition of her contributions, she received numerous honors, including Jamaica’s Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation and the Médaille de Chevalier de l’Ordre National from Burkina Faso.
Following her UN career, Dr. McSweeney remained active in academia, teaching and mentoring students at Boston University and Brandeis University, while continuing to advance research and collaboration on gender and international development.
Brenda cherished her friendships deeply and had a remarkable gift for maintaining connections with both lifelong friends and new acquaintances wherever life took her around the world.
Brenda’s love for her family was extraordinary and defined much of her life. She grew up in Needham with her parents and her beloved older sister, Nancy. From an early age, family was at the center of everything she did.
Among Brenda’s fondest memories were the summers she spent sailing with her sister in Cotuit, days filled with laughter, sea air, and the simple joy of being together. Those moments became cherished stories she carried with her throughout her life. After the passing of her sister, Brenda naturally stepped into the role of family matriarch. With warmth and devotion, she continued to nurture the bonds that meant so much to her. She especially treasured time spent on vacations and at family gatherings with her niece Kelly and Kelly’s son Zachary, and her nephew Gary, his wife Janet, and their children, Jessica and Jason, along with Jason’s wife, Elana and their daughter Lillian.
Visitation will be held in the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave, Needham, on Thursday, March 19th from 4-7, concluding with a prayer service. In honor of Brenda’s bright personality and the way she celebrated life, family and friends are kindly invited to wear vibrant colors to the services. It would mean so much to reflect the brightness she brought into the world.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Brenda’s memory to the Brighton-Allston Historical Society, the Friends of the Faneuil Library of the charity of your choice
