Carl O'Hara, MD Obituary

Carl Joseph O’Hara of Needham, formery West Cork, Ireland, passed peacefully at the age of 73 on December 3rd, 2024. Carl O’Hara lived a life defined by brilliance in his medical field, devout faith, and dedication to his family and friends.

After immigrating to the Boston area with his parents, aunts, uncles, and five siblings at age eleven, Carl proudly carried his love of Irish heritage and devotion to family throughout his life. While his roots remained firmly planted in Irish culture and family bonds, his natural curiosity and keen intellect also began to flourish in his youth. His growing passion for science blossomed in high school at St. Mary’s in Cambridge and led to him earning his B.S. from Boston College in 1974.

It was through his college peers that Carl fatefully met one Brigid Sullivan in 1977 while in medical school. They married in 1979 and went on to raise five children in Needham, MA. The O’Hara family were parishioners of St. Joseph’s in Needham and all five children attended St. Joseph’s School. Carl’s life was profoundly guided by his devout Catholic faith. He attributed all the blessings in his life—his home, family, and career —to his faith and the church, always recognizing them as gifts to be cherished.

Guided by this faith and driven by an exceptional work ethic, Dr. O’Hara pursued a distinguished career in pathology and laboratory medicine that was defined by groundbreaking contributions, leadership, and a deep commitment to education.

Following his undergrad at BC, Dr. O’Hara earned his M.D. from Georgetown School of Medicine in 1978. He completed postdoctoral training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at New England Deaconess Hospital and a Fellowship in Hematopathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Early in his career, Dr. O’Hara served as a Pathologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and Harvard University. In 1991, he joined the Mallory Institute of Pathology at Boston Medical Center, where he made significant contributions as a Surgical Pathologist and Hematopathologist. He was an outstanding ambassador for the department, fostering long-standing and vital collaborations with colleagues in Hemato-Oncology, the Amyloid Center, Surgical Oncology, and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Throughout his tenure he held numerous distinguished positions, including Director of Hematopathology, Chief of Surgical Pathology, Director of Residency Training in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Co-Director of the General Pathology/DRx course, and Vice-Chair for Education at Boston University School of Medicine.

Dr. O’Hara also served in leadership roles with the New England Society of Pathologists, including as President from 2003 to 2004. His colleagues often speak not only of his remarkable professional achievements but also of his personal qualities: esteemed yet humble, compassionate, funny, wise, and a trusted friend.

Alongside his clinical and leadership roles, Dr. O’Hara was a dedicated educator. Beginning as an Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1984, he went on to become a Professor of Pathology at Boston University School of Medicine in 1991 where he taught until 2018, when he was named Emeritus Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

In 2011, he was honored with the Stanley L. Robbins Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Carl was a pillar of his entire family, deeply adored by all who knew him. His bond with his wife was evident in every aspect of their lives—a partnership rooted in mutual respect, love, and support. Throughout the health challenges of his later years, Brigid stood by him with unmatched devotion; together they exemplified resilience, unconditional love, and shared faith. His family would like to thank the staff at Newbridge on the Charles in Dedham, MA for the excellent care Carl received the last few years.

Carl is survived by his wife, Brigid; his five children and in-laws, John & Micheal, Colin & Kate, Daniel & Allie, Eileen & Brian, and Kathleen & Ryan; his four grandchildren, Kieran, Molly, Benjamin, and Violet; his four sisters; Maureen, Esther, Margaret, and Anne; his many cherished cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews. In spirit Carl joins his brother Barry and his parents, Charles and Catherine O’Hara.
