Carol was born in Shrewsbury, Ma. On August 25, 1943. The great loss in
her life was the sudden death of her father when she was 7 years old.
After finishing high school, Carol moved to Boston where she attended
Wheelock College and received her Bachelor’s Degree in early childhood
education and then a Master’s in Social Work from Simmon’s College. She
spent the next 25 years at Beaverbrook Child Guidance Center as a
therapist and it was during this time she adopted 3 girls from India, two of
them coming from Mother Theresa’s orphanage.
Instead of retiring, Carol collected a menagerie of farm animals: chickens,
goat, pigmy pigs, morning doves, cat and dogs, all of whom lived with her
in Newton. She began an enrichment program for city children so that the
children would be introduced to farm animals and for a time she visited
various early education facilities. Carol worked for awhile as a preschool
teacher in Chinatown. She ended her career working for Hospice as a
Social Worker.
Carol’s girls have fond memories of doing volunteer work with her at
Drumlin Farms, NE Aquarium, the Heifer Project. They participated in
some of her efforts to save historical sites in Newton. A visit and camping
trip to Carol’s brother and wife in Utah was a highlight in the girl’s lives.
Carol is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Betsy and Bob
McPherson and their 6 children, her three daughters Nirmala Lynch, Gita
McPherson, Phalmalati Southerland and her four grandchildren Serina
Feeley, Thomas Lynch, Priya Holske, and Vivaan McPherson-Holske.
Carol passed away peacefully with family and friends by her side on September
6, 2023 after battling Alzheimer’s.
A celebration of Carol’s life will take place at Christ Episcopal Church in
Needham, Ma. (1132 Highland Ave., Needham, Ma. 02494) October 14 at
11 am.
