Cecilia Chang Obituary

In Loving Memory of Cecilia Chang

Mrs. Cecilia Chang, a devoted wife, mother, and cherished member of the Newton community, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, in Newton, Massachusetts. She was 99 years old.

Born on August 23, 1926, in Shanghai, China to Mr. and Mrs. V. H. Chen, Cecilia spent her formative years in the city before embarking on a journey that would take her across continents. She lived in Brazil and Japan before earning her Master’s degree in Education from McGill University in Montreal, Canada—an achievement that reflected both her intellectual curiosity and commitment to lifelong learning.

After completing her studies, Cecilia settled in Hong Kong where she built a vibrant life with her beloved husband of 57 years, Raymond P.T. Chang, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.Y. Chang. Together Celia and Raymond raised three children—Agnes, Camille, and Frederick—in a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Her nurturing spirit and steadfast presence created a foundation upon which her family flourished.

In the 1990s, Cecilia and Raymond relocated to the United States and eventually made their home in Newton, Massachusetts, and the Changs welcomed son-in-law Christopher White of Pittsburg, PA and daughter- in-law Karen Ting of Hong Kong to their family. Over the past decade, Cecilia and Raymond became part of the local community while continuing to cherish their close-knit family ties.

Cecilia was known for her warmth and compassion as much as for her spirited independence. She approached life with resilience and grace—qualities deeply rooted in her devout Catholic faith. Her belief provided strength during times of uncertainty and served as a guiding light throughout her long life.

A woman of many passions, Cecilia found joy in gardening—especially tending to orchids—and listening to classical music with Mozart being her favorite composer. Family gatherings brought her immense happiness; she treasured time spent with both immediate and extended family members. An animal lover at heart, she also delighted in being a proud “dog grandma” for many years.

Cecilia’s legacy is one of love, strength, and enduring faith. Her memory will live on through those who were fortunate enough to know her.

May her memory bring comfort to all who mourn her passing. A Funeral Service will be held on February 12, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Our Lady Help of Christians Church 573 Washington Street. Mass service will be live streamed at:  https://www.harborview.live/
