World traveler, environmentalist and married for sixty-five years, Christina Thom Hobbs, 94, passed away peacefully in her Fox Hill Village home in Westwood, MA on March 26, 2021. Born in Detroit, MI on April 20, 1926, Chris grew up in Bloomfield Hills, MI. She was the second oldest of six children of Edgar Robertson Thom and Mary Milner Thom. She had an older brother, a younger brother who died at 15 months, and three younger sisters, two of whom were twins. She attended the Brookside School and Kingwood School, both in Bloomfield Hills, MI and graduated from The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA. In 1946, she received a B.A. in psychology from Vassar College and a month later, married her college sweetheart, Sturtevant Hobbs.
After first living in New York City where her two sons, Geoffrey and Ian, were born, they all moved to Dedham, MA. There, Chris joined the Noanett Garden Club in Dover, MA to indulge her passion for gardening and took on leadership positions. In addition to flowers, Chris was very active in environmental issues which became her second passion. She was a long-term member (50+ years) of the Charles River Watershed Association.
Chris and Sturt were happily married for 65 years. They were members of the Dedham Country and Polo Club and the Profile Club in Franconia, NH near their Sugar Hill second home. They were active travelers visiting 55 countries together and were immersed in the Fox Hill Village community for 22 years. There Christina played competitive bridge weekly and nurtured a late self-discovery of watercolor painting and creative writing, taking classes in both. She and Sturt were members of the New Yorker group, discussing non-fiction articles for many years.
Chris outlived Sturt who died in 2012 and her second son Ian, who died in 2007. She is survived by her first son, Geoffrey Hobbs, of Kennesaw, GA; five grandchildren: Rana Stanfill-Hobbs married to Brandy, St. Petersburg, FL; Morgan Hobbs, married to Cathleen, Evanston, IL; Tessera Hobbs, Salt Lake City, UT; Jackson Hobbs, Portland, OR; Forester Hobbs, Barrington, RI; and a great-granddaughter, Emery Hobbs, Evanston, IL.
Chris was known for her quick wit and wonderful storytelling. To her credit, she embraced her blended and extended family. We will all miss her.
Donations in her name can be made to the Charles River Watershed Association.
A memorial service is planned for August 21 at 11 AM in the Wellesley Village Church, Wellesley, MA.
