Clara Klein Gallup, formerly of Cambridge, died peacefully July 1. She was just 2 weeks shy of her 90th birthday and was surrounded by her family with celebration, song, and prayer hours before her death. She loved being a resident at the Gloria Adelson Field Health Center at NewBridge on the Charles where she had lived since December 2009.
Born in Kankakee Illinois in 1920, she was an active partner in her husband Ernst Klein's ministry for 40 years, most notably at Old Cambridge Baptist Church in Cambridge, until his death in 1979. They had met in Rochester NY and married in 1939.
She had married Dana H. Gallup in 1984 and delighted in 19 happy years together, until he died in 2002.
She was a life-long gardener, always noticing the beauty in nature, no matter the season or weather. She daily expressed child-like joy in simple things, and was known for her social grace and thankful spirit. She volunteered for 20 years at Facing History and Ourselves and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Newton.
She leaves 4 children: Jim Klein and wife Zorida Mohammed of Rutherford, NJ, Judy Gillum of Muncie Indiana, Mary Jensen and husband Erik Jensen of Klarup, Denmark, and Janet Klein and husband Steve Goldberg of Needham, MA. She has 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. From her marriage to Dana H. Gallup, she leaves Dana T. Gallup and his wife Clare of Medford, MA, Richard Gallup and his wife Karen of Norfolk, MA, and Steven Gallup and his wife Debbie of Marshfield, MA, and four Gallup grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Newton, 848 Beacon St. (corner of Beacon and Centre) on Saturday July 3 at 1:00 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers donations in Clara’s name may be made to African Baobab, a Needham nonprofit organization that reaches out to Ugandan children orphaned by AIDS, PO Box 331, Needham Heights, MA 02494.
