Dale Malone, the eldest of 6 siblings, Diane, Marilyn, Meredith, Melinda and the late Bruce Hubbell, was the daughter of Marvin and Frankie Hubbell of Newton, MA. She passed away after a brief illness on August 21st 2024 surrounded by family and loved ones. Dale, or Dalesy to those who knew and loved her, studied classical ballet with the Joffre in NYC, but love conquers all, so she came home to be with her true soulmate Jack Malone in Needham, MA and has been by his side through thick and thin for over 65 years. Other well known nicknames for her were Prettygirl and affectionately, Super Broad, which was also the name of Jack’s boat in her honor.
While Jack was busy being one of the contractors who built the foundations of what Needham is today, Dale became the neighborhood ballet teacher, and was teaching classes out of her beautiful mirror lined basement studio lovingly built by Jack. If you were born in the 60’s or 70’s and lived in the Harris Ave area, she was probably your ballet teacher too.
Dale also had many friends in Manomet, where in the early 70’s, she and Jack bought a beat up little cottage on a cliff and turned it into a Northern ocean paradise. There, her son Kerry Malone and his children Nichole, Hailey and Dylan, then later joined by fiancé Sarah Shurtleff; and daughter Sherry Malone Denovellis, with her sons Jed Denovellis and the late Jesse Denovellis enjoyed wonderful childhoods there including boating, swimming, camping, lobstering and fishing. There was always music too. Just about any occasion can spark the Malone family to burst into songs with questionable lyrics.
Later Dale and her husband were welcomed into the community of Big Pine Key Florida where they built a house on a canal and an art studio for Dale. There she honed her photography and painting skills and became an award winning artist who frequented the art show circuit and was hung in many galleries both in the Florida Keys and in the galleries up North. She later went on to win Best in Show in the Florida Keys Watercolor Society’s annual competition and was a staple member of Artists in Paradise Gallery in Big Pine Key.
Dalesy loved nature and adventure and was a certified scuba diver, slalom water skier, archer, sailor, trap shooter, and in her high school years, varsity basketball player. She could drive, dock and trailer a boat, then back that trailer into the driveway in one try.
Her great grandchildren Shayla Denovellis, Hunter Denovellis, and Lillyana Denovellis used to love to dress up as superheroes. I can only think they were simply channeling the energy of their truly great grandma Dalesy. The newest member of the Tribe, Poppy Conley, will be sure to take on that legacy as she was Dale’s most recent and final delight and carries that same adventurous sparkle in her eye.
Along with scores of nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones, Dale is also survived by Jed’s wife Kate Denovellis, Hailey’s husband Brian Conley, Dylan’s wife Kat Malone, Lillyana’s mother Brittany Benevides, her husband John Benevides and Lilly’s half sisters Jocelyn and Olivia. At the end of her life Dale was attended by Zee who is now a forever member of the family.
Visiting hours will be held at The Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave, Needham, on Wednesday August 28th from 4pm-7pm.
A celebration of Dale will take place the following day, August 29th from 2pm-5pm at the Plymouth Yacht Club, 34 Union St Plymouth MA.
