David Richard Lowry of Hingham, MA, a long time Westwood school administrator and a highly respected education leader in Massachusetts, died on February 14, 2022 at age 85. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Marjorie, and their children Rick Lowry and his wife Susan of Southbury Conn, Cheryl Kulacz and her husband Mark, of Southborough, David Heistand and his wife Kim of Framingham, Bruce Lowry of Brookline, Christian Lowry and his wife Alison, of Portland, Oregon, and Deborah Heistand and her husband Chris of Oceanside, California as well as his much-loved grandchildren and great grandchildren. His daughter Penny Newton predeceased him. He also leaves his brothers Don Lowry of Falmouth, Maine and his wife Betsy and Steve Lowry and his wife Anita of Leland, North Carolina. In addition, he is fondly remembered by many former colleagues, students, and friends.
David was born in Southern California and moved with his family to Westwood, MA when he was a young boy. He graduated from Westwood High and spent a year at the University of Redlands in California. He then attended and graduated from Bates College in Maine. He completed his post graduate studies in Education at Boston University.
David’s career centered on supporting the education and well-being of the children he served over a period of nearly five decades. He was a much-admired school administrator in the town of Westwood for many years. His leadership and his gift for establishing meaningful human connections inspired his teachers, students, and parents. David held leadership positions in many professional educational organizations. After retiring, David was the executive director of two charter schools first in Boston and then in Franklin, an educational consultant, and an interim school principal in Chelmsford.
After their marriage, David and Marjorie raised their families in Wellesley, where David could be found tending his garden, building furniture and toys in his woodshop for his children and grandchildren, helping with homework, cooking family dinners, and making amazing pies! They enjoyed many years at their summer home in Pocasset on Cape Cod. David somehow also found time to be a watercolor and acrylic painter, a woodworker, a writer, a semi-professional singer, a boater, and a car restorer. A true Renaissance Man!
David enjoyed many wonderful years near grandchildren and subsequently moved to Duxbury on the South Shore where he sought out many rewarding part-time jobs and volunteer positions. Among other pursuits, he worked in a boat yard and drove a Duxbury primary school bus.
More important than any job or hobby was his family. He was the linchpin to his blended family of seven children who all benefitted deeply from his steady presence and loving guidance.
His family expresses appreciation to the Beacon Hospice program and to caregivers at Rose Court at Linden Ponds for their compassionate care.
A family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In David’s honor, memorial contributions can be made to the Linden Ponds Resident Care Fund, Philanthropy Office, 203 Linden Ponds Way, Hingham, MA 02043.
