Dimitra George Obituary

Dimitra George of Needham, formerly of Columbia, SC. sadly and peacefully passed away embraced by her niece on October 15, 2024.  She was the daughter of Steve and Amalia George, sister of the late George S. George, beloved sister-in-law of Helen Laganas George and aunt of Amalie Ann George of Needham, Massachusetts and many cousins, sisters-in-law and close friends.

Born in New York, Dimitra lived her early years in Wilmington, North Carolina. She graduated from Women’s College UNC in Greensboro earning a degree in social services.  Dimitra then went to the University of Chicago to earn her Masters in Social Services and PhD, with a concentration in public health services.  Most of her career was spent with the Department of Social Services for the State of South Carolina.

Throughout her life, she was a faithful steward of her beloved Saint Nicholas Church in Wilmington, NC, the Holy Trinity of Columbia, SC and presently Saint Demetrios in Weston, MA.  She was a member of the Philoptochos Society in each community that she was a steward.  

She was active in the Theater Club and Bridge Club in Columbia.  Dimitra was an avid reader and was actively part of many book clubs. She relished traveling with her friends during her younger years. In addition, she was a lover of animals.  Dimitra moved to Massachusetts to be with her family and during this time she was an active resident of the North Hill Community in Needham and joyfully participated in activities including serving as Resident Council President.

Her southern charm of gentle reserve will always be remembered.

Visitation hours will take place at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Weston, 57 Brown Street, Weston, MA from 2 to 2:45 with funeral service following. This service will be livestreamed via the St. Demetrios website, https://www.stdemetriosweston.org/ and go to the page labeled internet ministry.

Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery in Wilmington, NC.  Relatives and friends are kindly invited.

If you wish, memorial gifts in Dimitra’s memory may be offered to Saint Nicholas of Wilmington, NC, Holy Trinity of Columbia, and Saint Demetrios of Weston.
