Dr. Joseph L. Murphy

Dr. Joseph L. Murphy of Needham formerly of Wellesley retired Chief of Anesthesiology at Marlborough Hospital, died on June 19, 2012 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center-East Campus in Boston. He was 83.
Born in New York City, he graduated from Chaminade High in Mineola, NY, the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester in 1950 and NY Medical College. He served in the US Navy and was Chief of Anesthesiology on Guam. Dr. Murphy was Chief of Anesthesiology and served a term as Chief of Staff at Framingham Union Hospital/Metro West Med Ctr. and Chief of Anesthesiology at Marlborough Hospital. He was also past President and an active member of the NE Society of Anesthesiologists. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Needham Retired Men's Glee Club and the Wellesley Assemblies.
Dr. Murphy was the beloved husband for 58 ½ years of Janet (Watson) Murphy, the loving father of Denise M. Sauter of Sudbury, Richard W. Murphy of Ayer, Marianne M. Francke of Geneva Switzerland, Deirdre M. Sullivan of Medway, Tara M. Murphy Giles of Maynard and Chris Murphy of St. Petersburg FL, the beloved "Grampie" of George and Kate Sauter, Anna Lara, Ian and Colin Murphy, Niklas Francke, Anne, Luke and Brigid Sullivan, Isabelle Francke and Matt Giles and was the well loved father in law of Kenneth Sauter, Audur Murphy, Nils Francke, Thomas Sullivan and Jeffrey Giles.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Dr. Murphy on Mon June 25 at 10 AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Rd., corner of Washington St. Wellesley Hills followed by interment in Woodlawn Cemetery Wellesley. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours will be in the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave (Exit 19B off Rte 128) NEEDHAM on Sun from 4-8 PM.
