Edward Cutting Vaughan
January 12, 1946 - August 30, 2024
Edward (Ned) C. Vaughan, 78, of Easton, Massachusetts passed away surrounded by his family on August 30th, 2024.
He was born in 1946 in Whitman, Massachusetts to Albert Edward Vaughan and Ruth Ethel Vaughan (Pickett). Ned’s father passed away when he was young and his uncle, Marvin Pickett, played a prominent role in raising him. Growing up he enjoyed the outdoors, skiing, working with his hands and learning to sail from a family friend.
Ned graduated high school at Fryeburg Academy in Maine, then attended Virginia Tech at Danville and later joined the US Army in 1968 serving for 4 years. He was a Captain in the 4th Battalion of the 68th Armor Regiment in the 82nd Airborne. Known as Airborne Thunder, this regiment was billed as the “free world’s only airborne tank battalion.” He trained at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Knox, Kentucky and was stationed in South Korea.
He married Judy Blair Vaughan in 1970 in her hometown of Gretna, Virginia. After their move to East Bridgewater, Massachusetts in 1971, he attended Wentworth Institute of Technology receiving an Associate Degree in Building Technology. Being an entrepreneur at heart, after school he began a career in building steel structures and starting his company, National Erectors. He traveled extensively in the US building steel rack systems called “Speed Rack” in large warehouses. After the arrival of his third child, Suzy, he shifted careers to real estate selling homes and commercial properties for over 40 years, first as part of Century21 and then on his own with Vaughan & Co.
Ned was known for his love for olive martinis, seafood, pets, playing chess and summer days by his beautiful pool with his beloved family. He enjoyed doing things himself, long before DIY became fashionable, tackling many home projects himself and enjoying time spent on woodworking. Ned cherished time spent in the outdoors, especially time spent camping on Lake Umbagog in New Hampshire with his son, Ryan and just a few weeks ago with both his son and grandson, William. Ned was an adoring father and a proud grandfather always interested in each child’s and grandchild’s activities. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
Ned was preceded in death by both of his parents, his uncle Marvin Pickett and Aunt Priscilla Brighty. He is survived by his wife, Judy, children, Lindsay Vaughan Kalaw and her husband, Jose, Ryan Vaughan, and his wife Lindsay, and Suzanne Vaughan as well as his grandchildren, Addison Kalaw, Sydney Kalaw, Sophie Vaughan and William Vaughan.
Visitation will be held at Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave, Needham, Massachusetts on Friday, September 6, 2024 from 4 - 6 PM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to support veterans through The New England Center and Home for Veterans at nechv.org.
