Elisa Buenaventura Posso

Elisa Buenaventura Posso was born on March 18, 1931 in Santander de Quilichao, Cauca, Colombia. She was the 7th child of 8 children born to Manuel Maria Buenaventura and Elisa Posso de Buenaventura. Her birth was preceded by those of Angela Maria Dolores aka Lola, Hernando the first, Victor Mario, Lucia, Alfonso and Manuel Maria, and closely followed by that of her twin brother Hernando Jose (aka Joseph Helios Bonaventure). Elisa had 9 nieces and nephews (Ilse Elisa, Lotty, Heidy and Ewald Schuetz-Buenaventura; Julia Elisa and Maria Victoria Buenaventura-Ayala; Hernando Villamarin-Buenaventura; and Juan Manuel and Pola Elisa Buenaventura-Gonzalez).

After a brief illness, Elisa passed away on May 6, 2020 in the home of her oldest daughter Victoria Makrides in Westwood, MA. She was cremated on May 11th at the Newton cemetery. Her funeral arrangements are being handled by Eaton Funeral Home in Needham. She is survived by her children (Victoria (Klaus Hoyer) and Veblen Makrides), grandchildren (Paul Elijah Green (Jane Malcolm) and Gelando Thomas Makrides Beltrani (Pia Goeke)), great grandchildren (Lucas Galen and Milo David Malcolm Green), 6 of her nieces and nephews, and her dear twin brother Joseph. And by her two cats, Lily and Luigi.

Elisa loved her family dearly and often (even in her last days) reminisced fondly of her father and mother, her sisters and brothers, cousins, aunts and uncles. Among her dearly loved cousins and aunties were her cousin Nicolas Buenaventura and Auntie Betulia. She spoke nearly every evening with her daughter Veblen. She was a loving grandmother to her two grandsons (Paul and Gelando) and to her two great grandsons Lucas (whom she fondly called “the gentleman”) and Milo (she affectionately nicknamed “the cabason”). She shared a slightly ironic and definitely irreverent sense of humor with her son-in-law, Klaus.

As a child Elisa loved exploring the mountains of Cali with her best friend and twin brother Hernando. Elisa loved recounting and laughing over tales of their exploits and mischief making. She carried a love of nature all her life, for example, she had a small sailfish sail boat she called “Chubasco” that she loved to take out in the Boston Harbor; she also loved hiking in the Santa Barbara Mountains gathering herbs, in the New Hampshire mountains where her friend Natasha had a getaway and on the walking trails of Fairfield.

Passionate in everything she did, she proudly graduated from the Liceo Benalcazar in Cali Colombia as Class President in 1951. She then emigrated to the US to study Mechanical Engineering with a scholarship at the University of Texas, Austin. She graduated from UTA with a BA in 1958. In Austin, through her roommate and friend Sylva, she met and in 1953 married, Sylva’s brother Alkis Makrides. They had their 1st daughter in 1954 and their 2nd daughter in 1958; they later divorced. Elisa earned a Master of Science in Biophysics from Brandeis University in 1966 and carried out research in the lab of her dear friend Lynn Margulis at Boston University on the biophysics of cilia.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, she became immersed in the Boston Women’s movements with other local activists like Betsy Warrior and Abby Rockefeller. She studied Tae Kwon Do with Master Phil Do Kim at special women’s classes organized by Abby Rockefeller and Jayne West and earned her Black Belt in 1973. On March 1971 she participated in the ultimately 10 day liberation of 888 Memorial Drive, a Harvard University building, which subsequently led to the founding of the Cambridge Women’s Center (documented in Left on Pearl). In 1975, Elisa accompanied her partner Susan Brown to Colombia where among their many activities and adventures they lived with the Bari, an indigenous people who were notable for their matrilineal and egalitarian society.  In 1976, Elisa and Susan co-authored “Forced transition from egalitarianism to Male dominance; the Bari of Colombia”. In 1979, she sold her home in Newton, MA and moved to the west coast, first to Santa Barbara, California for the birth of her oldest grandson Paul in 1979. She then moved with her partner Susan and her daughter Veblen to San Francisco to briefly join the feminist record company Olivia Records. Elisa then following a deep interest in healing and nutrition studied Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon before returning to Santa Barbara. In Santa Barbara, she earned a degree in acupuncture from the Santa Barbara School of Acupuncture in 1984 and became a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist in 1985. She treated clients at the Santa Barbara School of Acupuncture Clinic.

Elisa was deeply spiritual and drew inspiration from many spiritual teachings and traditions including her Catholic faith and the teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Swamini Pramananda lovingly known as Ammaji, Byron Katie, Abraham Hicks and others. In 1987, she moved to Fairfield, IA where Maharishi International University had established a major US transcendental meditation community. She was initiated to TM in 1972 and remained deeply involved with TM for many years participating in TM-Siddhi practice at MIU. Although she remained strongly connected with her family in Santa Barbara (returning for the birth of her 2nd grandson Gelando in 1992, for example), she set down roots in Fairfield and in 1988 purchased a modest home, which over the years she proudly renovated herself, replacing ceilings, windows, floors, doors etc. As she proudly said, “I built my home”. Indeed she was always very handy, as a young girl she learned how to repair cars from her father and was never afraid to take on a car repair or other DIY project large or small.

She was the 3rd licensed acupuncturist in IA and treated many patients in her home acupuncture clinic from 1992 until her retirement in 2013 following a short bout with breast cancer in 2010.  After her retirement, she alternated between living with her oldest daughter Victoria and family (Klaus and Gelando) in Switzerland (Zurich and Baden) and MA (Westwood) and in Fairfield IA where her home was, and where her daughter Veblen lives.

In her last years she was fortunate to have had wonderful support that allowed her to remain living at home. She and her family most gratefully thank Cheryl, Jenny, Ruby, and Kathy in IA and Mirna, Darlene, Liz and Amalia in MA. In the fall of 2018, she discovered the Julia Ruth House in Westwood MA and began enthusiastically participating in their wonderful day program until the Covid-19 pandemic forced the JRH to temporarily close. On the day before she passed away, she was very happy to wave to Julia, Janice and Elaine from JRH who stopped by to wish Elisa a happy Mother’s day. On the morning of May 6th she enjoyed one of her all-time favorite movies Harold and Maude.

Elisa Buenaventura Posso Nació el 18 de marzo de 1931 en Santander de Quilichao, Cauca, Colombia. Fue la séptima hija de 8 hijos nacidos de Manuel María Buenaventura y Elisa Posso de Buenaventura. Su nacimiento fue precedido por los de Angela Maria Dolores, también conocida como Lola, Hernando el primero, Víctor Mario, Lucía, Alfonso y Manuel María, y seguida de cerca por la de su hermano gemelo Hernando José (también conocido como Joseph Helios Bonaventure). Fue la tercera acupunturista con licencia en IA y trató a muchos pacientes en la clínica de acupuntura de su casa desde 1992 hasta su jubilación en 2013 después de un breve episodio de cáncer de mama en 2010. Después de su jubilación, alternó entre vivir con su hija mayor Victoria y su familia ( Klaus y Gelando) en Suiza (Zurich y Baden) y MA (Westwood) y en Fairfield IA, donde estaba su casa y donde vive su hija Veblen.

En sus últimos años tuvo la suerte de contar con un apoyo maravilloso que le permitió seguir viviendo en su casa. Ella y su familia agradecen a Cheryl, Jenny, Ruby y Kathy en IA y Mirna, Darlene, Liz y Amalia en MA. En el otoño de 2018, descubrió la Casa Julia Ruth en Westwood, MA, y comenzó a participar con entusiasmo en su maravilloso programa de día hasta que la pandemia de Covid-19 obligó al JRH a cerrar temporalmente. El día antes de su fallecimiento, estaba muy feliz de saludar a Julia, Janice y Elaine de JRH que se detuvieron para desearle a Elisa un feliz día de la Madre. En la mañana del 6 de mayo, disfrutó de una de sus películas favoritas de todos los tiempos, Harold y Maude.
