Ferdinand J. (Fred) Campagna age 88, of Needham, MA died peacefully, surrounded by those he loved, on Monday, March 14, 2011. He was the beloved husband of America (Manzon) for 65 years and a devoted and loving father to his four children: Gary Campagna and his wife, Maryann, of Orleans, MA; Valerie Freund and her husband, Joseph, of Sarasota, FL; Cathy Walsh and her husband, Mark, of Norfolk, MA; and David Campagna of Lexington, MA. He was an adored grandfather to: Greg Campagna of Worcester, MA; Dana Campagna of Santa Barbara, CA; Michael Walsh of Baltimore, MD; and Mackenzie Walsh of Norfolk, MA; and great-grandfather to Annabelle Campagna.
He was born August 10, 1922 in Azzano X, Italy to Joseph and Angelina Campagna. Fred graduated from Newton Technical School. He served in World War II as a Technical Sergeant in the US Army Air Corps. He was a member of the “Flying Tigers” and Recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. He flew over 50 missions in the Pacific Theater. Throughout his career, he machined prototypes of emerging technologies. At General Investment and Development Corp., Boston, MA, he managed several residential properties and retired as Director of Purchasing. He enjoyed camping, boating, waterskiing, horseshoes and bowling. He loved music and was an incredible dancer. He was a member of the Needham Retired Men’s Club. Fred was happiest when he was with his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
Visiting hours will be held at the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Avenue Needham, MA 02492 on Friday, March 18th, 4-7 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 19th, 10 AM at St Joseph’s Church, Needham, MA. Internment with Military Honors will be at the Needham Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Supportive Living Inc. for Douglas House Wellness Center, 17 Warren Avenue, Woburn, MA 01801-4965.
