Bell, Frank A. Jr., 83, born October 19, 1927, died peacefully after a long courageous battle on July 20, 2011 in Needham. Frank was a graduate of Needham High School in 1946 and Northeastern University in 1951. At Needham High School as a player on the Varsity Hockey team, they won the State Championship in 1944 and 1946. He lettered in Hockey and Baseball at Northeastern University.
Frank worked at Newman Associates in sales for most of his working career. Frank had an outstanding twenty-one year career as a highly rated College Ice Hockey Official. He officiated many of the ECAC College Ice Hockey Championships, Beanpot and national Championships. After his officiating career was over, the Washington Capitals of the NHL hired him as a professional hockey scout.
He was the founder and director of the Needham Youth Hockey Program for twenty-five years where thousands of youngsters learned to skate and play the game of hockey. He will always be remembered for his interest in youth and sports in Needham. In the summertime Frank’s interest turned to golf where he was an accomplished golfer and member at Charles River Country Club for over forty years. Frank had two hole in one’s, one at Charles River and the other at Winchester Country Club.
He leaves behind his wife, Barbara A. Bell, his son Stephen M. Bell of Needham, his daughter Susan A. Vincent and her husband Peter of Taunton and his granddaughter Courtney Jane “CJ” Bell.
Funeral Services will be held in the Christ Episcopal Church, 1132 Highland Avenue Needham on Wednesday, July 27 at 10AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held in the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Tuesday from 4-7 PM. Interment Needham Cemetery.
