George Maarten Belzer, 97, of Needham, MA, passed away peacefully in his home on January 28, 2026.
George was born in Seerabala Tara, Indonesia to Dutch parents on February 25, 1928. He spent his childhood between Indonesia, The Hague and Wassenaar, The Netherlands. Upon completion of his Dutch schooling, he joined his father’s company, Jacob van den Bergh & Companie, and had periods of living in The Netherlands, Brazil and New York City. He immigrated to the United States, served in the US Army from 1953-1955 and attended Columbia University. After a short stint with RCA, he went on to have a 30+year career as a banker with Bank of Boston, living in Boston and London (for 9 years).
George was an avid city dweller for most of his life, and rarely missed his daily walk around the Beacon Hill area upon his retirement. In 2005, at the age of 77, he moved into his apartment at North Hill in Needham. He moved to the suburbs to be closer to his sister, Julia Belzer Twigg. He was an avid reader, collector of modern art, supporter of PBS, a great questioner and enjoyed following the lives of his extended family.
George is survived by his sister, Julia Belzer Twigg, of Wellesley. He is lovingly “Oom George” to his 8 nieces and nephews, and 20 grandnieces and grandnephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Folkert Oene Belzer, of Madison, WI.
The burial will be private.
