George Francis Jr. Greene, Retired Captain, Boston Police Dept. of Lynnfield, formerly a forty year resident of Needham, passed at his home on the morning of Wednesday, January 25, 2012. His passing was peaceful, while he was surrounded by his loved ones, he was 89 years old.
George was a graduate of Brighton High School Class of 1941 earning the distinction of being the last five letter man to graduate from Brighton High. He played on the CYO black and white all stars baseball team and hit a triple, a double and a single off of Satchel Paige. George attended Boston College for a year and played football on the undefeated 1942 team which was supposed to go on to the Sugar Bowl but lost in a crushing defeat to their unranked rival Holy Cross. Due to that loss the team cancelled its victory party reservations at the Coconut Grove the night of the infamous fire.
He then enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a radioman, 2nd class, during World War II. He served on the USS Bataan and was stationed at Guantanamo Bay for a time. Upon his return he attended Syracuse University. He then went on to the Boston Police Academy. As a police officer he attended law enforcement courses at Babson College. He was a Boston Police Officer for 37 years, retiring with the rank of Captain in 1987.
George was a carpenter, home gardener, avid golfer and fantastic cook.
George was pre-deceased by his first wife Priscilla M. Hunt and his second wife Elizabeth Fox. George is survived by his 8 children, George F. Greene III and his wife Donna of Deland Florida, Nancy E. Naughton and her husband Shawn Naughton of Millis, Karen A. Greene of Wareham, Robert M. Greene and his wife Rebecca of Upton, Brian M. Greene and his wife Cheryl of North Easton, Judy M. Murphy and her husband Kenneth Murphy of Westford, Janet B. Crockett and her husband David Crockett of Lynnfield, Linda M. Carr of Chelmsford and 2 stepchildren, Mary Ellen Johnson of Rhode Island and Louis Fox of New Hampshire. George is also survived by his brother William A. Greene of Brighton. George has 16 grandchildren who think that he hung the moon. Danielle Strachman, Jacqueline Strachman, Christopher Greene, Austin Greene, Evan Greene, Robert Greene Jr., Danyka Greene, Nicole Crockett, Angel Crockett, Joshua Crockett, Sarah Crockett, Autumn Samuelson, Erik Johnson, Sarah Johnson, Justin Fox and Astoria Fox. George will also be missed by the children of his brothers, Lee and Robert Smith of California, and Janice Greene of Brighton.
Funeral from the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Tuesday January 31st at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours on Monday from 4-7 PM. Interment with Military Honors at St. Mary's Cemetery in Needham. Please come and celebrate George's memory with his family.
