Gloria B. Vokonas died on 11/02/10 at the age 68 following a long illness.
Gloria graduated from the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio with a BS in Education. Prior to coming to Massachusetts in 1969, she served as a business teacher and program supervisor for several years at the Chicago Board of Education in Chicago, Illinois.
She had a long and outstanding career serving the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and its agencies in multiple roles from 1975-1994. These included the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act programs, the Executive Office of Economic Affairs, where she served as Assistant Secretary and later as Budget Director for the Massachusetts Senate, Committee on Ways and Means (1982-1985). She served as Director of Administration and Finance for the Massachusetts Port Authority from 1985-1994. She was employed by American Airlines since 1999 and currently served as a Customer Service Manager for AA Ground Services at Logan International Airport focusing on personnel and administrative issues.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Pantel S. Vokonas, a physician in the VA Boston Healthcare System and also by her brother David Loveland and his wife Violet of Painesville, Ohio, as well as several nephews and nieces.
Visiting hours are planned from 3 to 7 PM at the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home on Friday November 12th, 465 Centre Street, Newton MA.
A special prayer service will be said on Saturday morning November 13, at 11:00AM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England (Ruggles and Parker St) in Boston. As per her wishes, she will be interred with her mother and father in Ohio on Tuesday of the following week. No flowers, please. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA.
