Hannah Chung Balcanoff, 94 died peacefully in her home Tuesday November 20, 2018 surrounded by family. Born in Kohala Hawaii, Hannah lived with her parents and five siblings (predeceased) on the Islands of Hawaii and Oahu. She and her family survived the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 when their home was showered with bullets during the attack.
Hannah set off for New England to attend the Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery in Boston, graduating in 1948. While on the east coast, she met her beloved husband Peter Jacob Balcanoff and settled in Waban, MA. She was a dedicated wife to Peter for 41 years until his passing in 1992. She was a talented homemaker who enjoyed bringing artistry to all that she did, including sewing, cooking, decorating and gardening. Hannah was a loving and devoted mother of three children; Claudia Lucas of Mesa, AZ, Carol Lane of Medfield, MA and Peter Balcanoff of Waban, MA and “Mimi” to five grandchildren, Victoria Lane of Roslindale MA, Michael Lane of Lyman, ME, Samantha, Hannah and Emma Balcanoff of Waban, MA. Mother-in-law to David Lucas and David Lane and grandmother-in-law to Ryan Driscoll.
Hannah lived for her family and her greatest joy was nurturing them with steady wisdom, laughter and delicious home cooked food. She was always willing to share a warm and welcoming smile to anyone she met, along with a positive word of encouragement and perhaps a freshly picked vegetable from her garden—never allowing guests to leave her home empty-handed. Hannah lived a life full of love and laughter with friends and family who were touched by her radiance and joyful spirit which will be remembered by all.
A Funeral Service will be held ay Newton Cemetery Chapel, 701 Walnut St, Newton, on Friday, November 30 at 1:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family beginning at 12:15pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in honor of Hannah to The Good Shepherd Community Care (GSCommunityCare.org) in Newton, MA or the charity of your choice.
