Harvey David Shane

May 31, 2022

Harvey David Shane, 88, of Needham, MA, died peacefully May 31 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital from complications of Covid-19.

He is survived by his partner, Bette Vogel, daughters Stephanie (Robert Moore) Shane and Andrea (Glenn Raucher) Shane, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Jacqueline Anne (Feeney) Shane, daughter Lee Anne Shane, and brother Lawrence Shane.  He also leaves behind a legion of former students and colleagues who were profoundly influenced by Harvey’s personal warmth and commitment to public education.

A native of Chelsea and Lynn, MA, Harvey graduated from Salem State Teachers College. He taught in Central Islip, NY, and then embarked on a nearly 30-year career with the Department of Defense Dependants Schools.  Harvey taught English and Social Studies in Heidelberg, Germany and Upper Heyford, England.  After receiving a Master’s Degree in Counseling from UMass Amherst, he continued his DoDDS career as a high school guidance counselor in Mannheim and Karlsruhe, Germany.  He was also a passionate member of his local chapter of the teacher’s union, and his career included highly active roles for the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

A gifted singer, he sang on live radio as a young man and participated in numerous community theater productions throughout his working life.

Upon retirement, he enrolled in a rigorous 2 year acting program in New York City and enjoyed a career in television and theater. He moved back to his native Boston-area in 1997 and continued to sing professionally for a number of years, with the Showtime Singers of Newton, the Young at Heart Singers of Needham and the North Shore, as well as for many nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the area.  When he wasn't singing, he loved to be in the garden, or out for a meal and long talks with friends and family.

He was a gentle soul whose joy and wit will be greatly missed and remembered forever.

Donations in his memory may be made to Salem State University.
