Irene Marines Maravelias age 89, of Needham, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2021 surrounded by her family. Irene is survived by her daughters Diane Maravelias and Carole Maravelias Buckley, son-in-law Robert Buckley, and three grandchildren Garrett, Sarah, and Lukas. Irene was born in Boston, the beloved daughter of William and Demitra (Papanikolauo) Marines both of Greece.
Irene grew up in Boston and attended the Girls Latin School where her passion for education was born. After high school, Irene attended Boston University where she received her bachelors in education. Shortly after, Irene married George Maravelias on August 19, 1955 and they started their family and her new career as a teacher. Irene’s passion for education led her back to school as she raised her young daughters. She attended Simmons College where she received her master’s in education. She devoted 30 years of her career to the Needham public school system teaching third, fourth and fifth grade at both the Steven Palmer and the High Rock School.
Irene and George moved to Needham in 1965, where they spent the next 57 years making memories. Irene enjoyed spending her time surrounded by her loved ones. She liked hosting many dinner parties with friends, Sunday nights with family, and summer pool parties with her beloved neighbors. Over the years, her neighbors became her extended family and their children, her extended grandchildren. Irene had a fun-loving and light-hearted side that her family and friends cherished. She loved to travel and was an avid book reader.
Despite her many academic and personal achievements, Irene’s proudest job was being a grandmother. She attended every school play, concert, and graduation. Most of all, Irene will be remembered as a devoted caretaker to her parents, husband, and especially her daughter Diane whom she devoted her life to.
Visiting hours will be held in the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave, Needham on Sunday July 11th from 3pm-5pm. Friends and family are kindly invited to attend. A funeral service will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown Street Weston, MA on Monday July 12th at 9:30am. Interment will follow at the Needham Cemetery.
