Jane C. (Smith) Mentzer

September 11, 1932 ~ April 18, 2022 (age 89)

Jane C. (Smith) Mentzer, of Needham, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, April 18th soon after Easter day ended.  Born on September 11, 1932 in Holyoke MA, and raised in Newton, Jane was the daughter of the late Augustus B. Smith and Elsie G. B. (Critchett) Smith.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband Edward S. Mentzer, to whom she enjoyed 49 years of marriage.  Jane is survived by her children Russell S. Mentzer (Susan) of Danvers, Lynn S. (Mentzer) Jarvis (Francis) of Centerville and Stephen A. Mentzer (Irene) of Dartmouth.  Jane was the devoted Grammie to her seven wonderful grandchildren Caitlyn Jarvis, Matthew Jarvis, Joshua Mentzer, Tyler Mentzer, Adam Mentzer, Nicholas Mentzer and Brianna Mentzer.

Jane was a compassionate and nurturing soul, which lead her to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from National College of Education in Evanston, IL.  She taught elementary school for a number of years, until taking the time to raise her children. Later, she helped run the nursery school at Christ Episcopal Church in Needham for many years as she loved the curiosity of three and four year olds.  In 1979, Eddie and Jane entered into franchise ownership with a Carvel Ice Cream store in Woburn, which was both a labor of love and a learning experience!

Jane and Eddie retired and settled into life as Grandparents enjoying each of their grandkids.  Jane explored many hobbies in painting, knitting and yoga but her biggest commitment was to her church life at Christ Episcopal Church.  Through Sunday School teaching, ushering, Coffee Hour or Collation Committee, Jane was there to help.

Jane spent the last five years living at Avita of Needham under their incredible loving care, and has been lovingly supported by Good Shepard Hospice for the past two years.

All are welcome to celebrate Jane’s life at her funeral service on Saturday, April 23 at 11:00 at Christ Episcopal Church, 1132 Highland Ave, Needham.  In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate donations to Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of your choice.
