Jane Sugden Obituary

Jane Sugden, 96, of West Harwich, MA. passed away on May 22, 2024. She was born in Boston, MA. on September 30, 1927 to Mildred and Walter Sugden, joining her two older Brothers, John and James. Jane spent her childhood in West Roxbury, MA. Jane graduated from Briarcliff Junior College in Briarcliff Manor NY, and later taught at The Brimmer and May School, Chestnut Hill. She later served as Trustee and Trustee Emeritus.

A resident of Boston’s Back Bay for many years, Jane would later become a year round resident at her Cape Cod home in West Harwich where she devoted much of her time to boating and fishing. Her boatmanship was remarkable. Jane was one of the very first women to take and pass the “Power Squadron Exam” at a time when women were excluded from membership. A lifelong animal lover and breeder, Jane owned many dogs over the years, including her beloved Vizslas. She was an active member of the Vizsla Club of Central New England, as well as a supporter of the Buddy Dog Humane Society. Jane enjoyed hosting frequent visits from family and friends, especially on festive holidays. Jane is survived by her three nephews: James W. Sugden, II, The Rev. John F. Sugden, Jr., Peter B. Sugden, their spouses Jocelyn Ajami Sugden, Valerie Sugden, (spouse of Jane’s nephew the late Jeffrey B. Sugden), Carol Sugden, Lindsay Sugden and many great and great, great nieces and nephews.
