Janet Kelly-Machunski Obituary

Janet Kelly-Machunski, 91, of Needham and South Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2024.

Born in Boston on August 14, 1932, Janet was the daughter of the late Stephen and Dorothy Fleming, and the sister of the late Stephen J. Fleming III, all of Needham.

Predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert E. Kelly, Janet leaves her daughter, Kathleen J. Kelly of Boston and son Robert E. Kelly Jr., and his wife Maureen of Boston and Chatham. Janet is also survived by her three loving grandchildren, Robert III, Thomas, and Nora Kelly.

Also survived by her cousins, Mary Fleming of Medford and John Fleming and his wife Mary of Milton.

A former 42 year resident of Needham and a graduate of Needham High School (1951) and Saint Elizabeth’s School of Nursing (1954), Janet spent her career serving as a Registered Nurse at The Glover Memorial Hospital (now BID Needham) for 32 years. Nursing was her passion, and she was an active member of The Saint Elizabeth’s Nursing Alumni Association. She was active in The Needham Visiting Nurses Association, Saint Bartholmew Guild, The Junior New Century Club, The Needham Boosters Club, and of course the “Queen of Hearts Club” where she shared so many friends.

Remarried later in life to Victor L. Machunski, Jan and Vic found much happiness in The Knob Hill Shores neighborhood of South Yarmouth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday February 29th at Saint Bartholomew Parish in Needham at 10:30 AM. Visiting hours for family and friends will be at 9:00 AM at The Eaton Funeral Home in Needham prior to the service. Private burial to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Stoneham.

Due to Lenten restrictions on flowers, memorial contributions to honor Janet’s nursing legacy at BID Needham may be made by visiting https://www.bidneedham.org/giving.

We remember Janet as an avid sports fan, lover of flowers and most importantly, an adoring Grandmother. She will be deeply missed.
