Janice Hunt Obituary

Janice Gayron Hunt, Needham (1930 - 2022)

Proud mother and grandmother died at home on April 19th from cancer, surrounded by books and family. Endlessly curious, an inspirational leader and always engaged, Janice Lane grew up in Washington DC and was a graduate of Georgetown Visitation (1948) and of Wellesley College (1952). She remained devoted to both schools throughout her life. She married Roger B. Hunt in 1954 and, after two years in Italy, they settled in the Boston area.

She held leadership positions in numerous organizations, including: Wellesley College, the Winsor School, the Trustees of Reservations, the Charles River Watershed Association, the Huntington Theatre, the Boston Chapter of Save Venice and, the United Nations Association of Greater Boston. She was passionate about the arts—from the Boston Symphony Orchestra (listening from the second balcony for over 70 years) and the Museum of Fine Arts, to the Winslow Homer Studio in Prouts Neck, ME and the Accademia in Venice, Italy. She lived with a vibrant energy enhanced by friendships old and new, near and far.

Janice was predeceased by Roger (2018) and leaves their four children: Susan Gayron Hunt of New York NY, Roger Browne Hunt, Jr. of Medfield MA, Julia (Lia) Hunt Zylstra of Dedham MA and Sarah Hunt Broughel of Auburndale MA—and seven grandchildren: Roger Browne Hunt III, Madelaine Hunt Byrne, Olivia Lane Hunt, Ian Hunt Zylstra, Simon Lane Zylstra, John Clancy Broughel and Luke Broughel.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, June 2 at 11am at Story Chapel, Mount Auburn Cemetery.
