Jeremiah Bresnahan Obituary

Jeremiah Joseph Bresnahan, 90, of Needham, Massachusetts, died on January 18, 2026.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ellen Dunne Bresnahan; his children Ellen Bresnahan, Stephen J. Bresnahan, and Timothy J. Bresnahan; his sister, Judy Mawn; his brother-in-law Tom Dunne (Winanne), his grandchildren Emily Young (Bill), Melissa Hamblet (Ali), Ryan Hamblet, and Casey Bresnahan; his great-grandchildren Theodore and Christopher, and many close nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his son Michael J. Bresnahan, who died in October 2025, and his sisters Faye, Nancy and Sally.

Born and raised in Medford and Norwood, Massachusetts, Jerry graduated from Harvard College (Class of 1957) and Harvard Law School (1960). He began his legal career at the Securities and Exchange Commission and later practiced law at two Boston law firms. He had an unusual gift for understanding complex material; Jerry wrote the mutual fund prospectuses that most of the rest of us never even attempt to read.

Jerry was calm, steady, and easy to be around. He was always happy to see you and never one to complain. He rarely raised his voice, except at the television when the Red Sox, Bruins, or Celtics were not playing up to their potential – and when they were winning all those championships.  Whether it was how to throw a left jab with power (Jerry was an intramural boxer at Harvard), how to execute a sweeping turn on a ski slope, or how to use an iPhone, Jerry was a lifelong learner.  He particularly (including at the dinner table as a boy—with special dispensation from his mother and father) loved reading anything and everything: the Boston Globe sports page every morning, poetry, classic and contemporary literature, and, as a lector, the first and second readings at hundreds of Masses throughout the years.  Jerry also enjoyed opera, pre-dawn runs and workouts at the West Suburban Y, trivia with friends at North Hill, and he especially loved traveling the world with Ellen.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1382 Highland Ave, Needham, MA 02492. Visitation will be held beforehand from 9:30–10:45 AM at Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave, Needham, MA (across the street from the Church). Burial will follow at Newton Cemetery & Arboretum, 791 Walnut St, Newton Center, MA 02459.

Jerry would be honored by a contribution in his name to Nativity Preparatory School, 9 Lamartine St, Boston, MA 02130.
