Joan Whoriskey Obituary

Joan (Schermerhorn) Whoriskey, of Hunnewell Hill, Newton and Egypt Beach, Scituate, passed away on Nov 28, 2021.

Joan was born in Boston and raised in Wellesley. She lived in Dover, MA before moving to Newton where she made her home for over fifty years. Joan was a homemaker extraordinaire. She kept a household of twelve people running, attending children’s sporting and theatre events, outfitting all in her signature homemade sweaters and sending her daughters off to school dances in her one of a kind homemade dresses that she sewed. She enjoyed summering at Egypt Beach in Scituate for many years surrounded by family. She always knew when it was low tide and the best time to swim out to first rock with the grand-children. Joan enjoyed family functions, her bridge club meetings, chatting or lending a hand with her neighbors and singing with the Newton Community Chorus.

Joan was the beloved wife of Dr. Frederick G. Whoriskey who predeceased her. Joan is survived by her sister Margaret “Peg” (Schermerhorn) Sears of Hopkinton, MA and her sister-in-law Jocelyn M. Schermerhorn. Her brother Horace Schermerhorn and brother in-law Donald Sears predeceased her. Joan is also survived by nine of her ten children and their spouses Dr. Fred Whoriskey Jr. and his wife Lise Paquin, Gail Zwerling and her husband Dr. Hayward Zwerling, Claire Holland Esq. and her husband George Holland, Dr. Susan Whoriskey and her husband Dr. Douglas Barker, Julie Jordan and her husband John Jordan, Stirling Somers and her husband Eric Somers Esq., John Whoriskey and his wife Julie Whoriskey, Mary Beth Hanssens and her husband Kent Johnson and Sarah Sabers. Her son Douglas Whoriskey predeceased her. She is the beloved grandmother of nineteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
