John Francis Whalen Jr. of Needham, Massachusetts, passed away at home on Saturday, March 15th, 2025, with his wife by his side. John was born on December 28th, 1949 to John and Katherine (Springham) Whalen. John was a member of the Needham Fire Department for over 30 years, retiring as a Deputy Chief. John’s commitment to the fire department was something that he took very seriously, and was matched only by the camaraderie he shared with his fellow first responders. He was a steward of the environment, his community, and his country. John was an avid outdoorsman, a talented gardener, particularly with techniques for cultivating his fruit trees, and loved animals. He also enjoyed playing goalie in the men’s hockey league, the local baseball league, skiing, and the Soaring Society of America, where he was completing his gliding pilot license.
John lived in Dover, NH as a child, and his family moved to Newton, Massachusetts when he was in middle school. He attended Newton North High School and graduated in 1967. Following high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a military officer in the 504th Military Police Battalion in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. He was proud of his military service and how it prepared him for his career as a firefighter, and continued to serve as a reservist for many years. John also received his Bachelor's degree from Boston State in 1982.
John and Susan met at Warren Jr. High and attended their Freshman Prom in 1964. They were married on January 7, 1978 at the Boston College chapel. He is survived by his beloved wife Susan Whalen of 47 years and his four children: John Whalen III of Walpole; Brian Whalen of Walpole; Michael Whalen of Colorado; Caroline (Whalen) Lovett and husband Jonathan Lovett of Norfolk. He is also survived by three wonderful grandchildren: Raegan and Madelyn Lovett of Norfolk, and Brian Whalen of San Antonio, Texas. He is predeceased by his parents John and Katherine Whalen of Needham. He extensively researched his family’s heritage; his paternal Irish ancestry and his maternal P.E.I. roots, and enjoyed maintaining his yard, especially the trees and gardens which his great grandparents had planted.
John’s generous and loving spirit, humble and grateful character, and desire to do the right thing regardless of the circumstances will be greatly missed.
A Graveside service concluding with Military Honors will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, 1 Wellesley Ave, Needham, on Wednesday, April 16th at 11:30AM.
