Joseph R. Scolavino, of Needham, a retired culinary arts instructor, died on Feb 27, 2012 at Epoch of Weston. He was 86.
Born in Brooklyn, NY he worked as a leather cutter in New York City and later at Green Shoe in Roxbury. He served in the US Navy during WW II in the European and Pacific Theatres of operation. He was a turret gunner on a sea plane in Patrol Bombing Squadron 21, attached to the USS Chandeleur, and had also served on the US Bristow. He also served during the Korean War. He was awarded 3 Bronze Stars and an Air Medal. Joe was a selectman for the Town of Bellingham and had served as Chairman of the Board. He operated Rosewood Dairy in Bellingham for many years and later taught culinary arts at Keefe Tech in Framingham and business management at Mt. Ida College in Newton Centre. Joe was also a Certified Executive Chef.
Joe was the beloved husband for 31 years of Joanne (Green) Scolavino, the father of Patricia Levesque of Bellingham, Michael Scolavino of Mashpee, Judith Scolavino of Boca Raton FL and the late Jeanne Scolavino. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A visiting hour will held in the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Fri Mar 2 from 10:30 until 11:45 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church at 12 Noon. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Services will conclude with Military Honors at St. Joseph Cemetery West Roxbury.
