Joseph Smiroldo Jr., 57 years old of Newton, died peacefully on August 1, 2021 at Mass General Hospital, after a long illness. His parents, brother and sister-in-law stayed with him in the hospital until just two hours before his passing.
Joe is survived by and was the son of Gloria and Joseph Smiroldo and by his younger brother John. He is survived also by his sister-in-law, Susane Smiroldo, and by his beloved nieces and nephew, Valentina, Lorenzo and Antonella Smiroldo as well by aunts in Virginia and Cape Cod and by many cousins in Massachusetts, Virginia, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and other parts of the country.
Joe graduated from Newton North High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Merrimack College. He spent most of his professional career as a health insurance claims examiner where he was considered a top performer.
Joe was a loving person. He loved his family, his Catholic faith and being with friends. He enjoyed going to lunch and to Suffolk Downs with his Mom where he earned the reputation of being a good handicapper. He played golf frequently until physical limitations ended this pastime. Joe was a staunch fan of the New England Patriots, being a season ticket holder for many years. He was a movie buff with a very large collection of DVDs of every genre. He took special joy in visiting his grandmother Vita Smiroldo in Buffalo and playing golf there with his Uncle Murph. He and his grandmother took every chance they could to play Bingo, even when she visited us in Newton. And he was very fond of our toy poodle, Tiki, so often in Joe’s arms.
A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Newton, MA, at Noon on Saturday August 7, preceded by a viewing in the vestibule of the church, from 10:30 to 11:30AM.
