Leila Montt Obituary

Leila Marie (Jensen) Montt, aged 90, of Needham and Sandwich, MA, passed on April 22, 2021 of age related illness surrounded by family.  Leila was born in Dedham in 1931 and grew up in Needham where she was an active member of her high school class, a drum majorette, on the student council and an honors student, voted “most intelligent” by her classmates, graduating in 1948.  Leila was also a member of The First Baptist Church and Carter Methodist Church youth groups.  She then attended and graduated from Boston University in 1952 with a B.A. in Fine Arts and was very active there, as well, involved in student government, the arts, and her sorority.

Leila settled in Needham after marrying Dave in 1954, raising her family there over the next 34 years. She and Dave later retired to Cape Cod in Sandwich MA.  While in Needham raising her family, she was very active in the First Baptist church where she was a member of the women’s “Calendar Group” and was responsible for the Sunday floral arrangements. In the community,  she was a Cub Scout den leader, a Girl Scout troop leader, an organizer in the Needham Dinner-Dance Club, a volunteer for Leslie Cutler’s campaign, and organized and planned several Class of 1948 Needham High School reunions.   Her creative and artistic accomplishments were demonstrated by the numerous finished embroidery projects and framed sketches throughout the house, and by the countless Halloween costumes, holiday outfits and formal occasion dresses she made for her children and herself.

She possessed strong family values, and after she and Dave renovated the third floor of the family’s Victorian home, which included the addition of an elevator, she moved her parents into the newly designed third floor apartment where her children and parents grew up together under the same roof for the next 15 years.  She also hosted numerous 4th of July parties and other social gathering, bringing family and friends together.

Professionally, she started out as a receptionist for Boston Woven Hose where she met her husband, Dave. After raising her family as a stay-at-home mom and (after reading her husband’s college textbook on accounting the night before her interview) was hired as the Comptroller for Plastic Omnium in Canton, supporting them for several years.  She and Dave moved to Sandwich in 1988.  She was hired as the Comptroller for both Cuffies Clothing in Hyannis and then the Cape Cod Railroad.

Leila downsized after several years on her own in Sandwich and moved to Southport in Mashpee. She participated in various social groups and became the Treasurer for Garden Club at the Southport Community.

Beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, wife of David Garcia Montt (deceased), mother to Jeffrey Peter Montt (deceased) and sister to Betty Ann Jensen (and Garrison) Hall (deceased), she is survived by her children, David (and Lisa) Montt, Sandra (and Steve) Carter, Tina (and Kelvin) Garcia, and grandchildren Daniel (and Danielle) Montt, Chris Montt, Melanie (and Chris) Astraukas, Brant (and Subaiou) Carter, Tucker Carter, Dionis Carter, Katie Garcia and Jojo Garcia, and great-grandson Horace Carter.  A private service was held at Eaton Funeral Home.  Donations may be made to the Cape Cod Symphony Scholarship Fund in memory of Leila Marie Montt.
