Lorraine (Thomas) Welsh

Lorraine (Thomas) Welsh, formerly of Needham, died on March 4, 2011 in Brazil at the age of 82. She was the beloved wife of the late Laurence T. Welsh and sister of the late Joseph J. Thomas Jr. She is survived by her sister in law Joan L. Thomas of Needham, her nieces Karen McDaniel and her husband William of Needham, Kyle Thomas Wong and her husband Dana of Mashpee and Karyl Astudillo and her husband Manuel of Marlborough; three grandnieces, Melissa Forbes and her husband Darrell of Brentwood NH, Dawn McDaniel of Sharon and Mariah Wong of Mashpee, a great grandniece Brenna Forbes, her cousins Donald Harmande of Clifton Park, NJ and Dolores Cromwell of Little Egg Harbor NJ. She is also survived in Brazil by Nely Borges, her loving caretaker and her family. Lorraine was born in Brooklyn, NY, attending school in NY before moving to Needham. She was a graduate of Needham High School Class of 1946. She attended Boston University School of Journalism Class of 1950. While at BU she began working at The Needham Chronicle as a columnist. She ultimately worked for the Boston Museum of Science at which time she became Director of Publications and was listed in the Who’s Who of American Women in 1976. She retired from the Museum in 1991 continuing as a columnist for the Needham Chronicle/Needham Times. She was active in and a past president of the Needham Historical Society. She also taught astrology, which was a skillful passion of hers. Her funeral will be from the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave NEEDHAM on Sat April 2 at 10 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Needham Cemetery. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
