Maralean "Maggy" Woodcock Obituary

Maralean Gillis "Maggy" Woodcock died on January 14, 2025 peacefully in her residence at The North Hill Retirement Community. Maggy was born in New Mexico in 1939, and soon moved to Colorado then Wyoming where she spent a very happy childhood attending rodeos with her father and making music with her mother. Maggy left the West to attend Vassar College, where she graduated in 1961 before becoming a computer programmer and systems analyst for AT&T and Honeywell in the early digital days. Later in life she earned a Masters in Education at John Carroll University and devoted herself to tutoring elementary students in math and reading. She married Alfred Cannon Woodcock in 1963, and they enjoyed a long and peripatetic life together living in Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Atlanta, Cleveland (starting in 1975), and finally Boston. Maggy, Al and their daughter, Heather, lived in Shaker Heights for many years. They loved the Cleveland area and all it had to offer: picnics at the Holden Arboretum, concerts outside at Blossom Music Center, trips to the Cleveland Museum of Art, and performances by The Cleveland Orchestra. Maggy was President of the Cleveland Vassar Club and the Social Study Club; she was Chair of the Women’s Council of the Cleveland Museum of Art; she was a member of the Shaker Lakes Garden Club, and she was a parishioner at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Maggy and Al moved to Massachusetts in 2015 to be near Heather and family. They enjoyed their life and friends at North Hill Retirement Community in Needham. Maggy leaves her daughter Heather Woodcock, her son-in-law Daniel G. Monahan, and grandchildren Silas and Louisa. A family service will be held at historic Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. Those who wish to contribute in Maggy’s memory might consider The Cleveland Orchestra, Severance Hall, 1101 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106 (216-231-7522)or St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 79 Denton Rd., Wellesley, MA 02482 (781-235-7310)
