It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Margaret Dorothy (Pike) Batten on April 5th, 2021, at the age of 104 in Dedham, MA.
Margaret was born in 1916, the daughter of Bertha and John Pike of Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland, Canada. While still young she taught for 4 years in a one room school house in Port-aux-Basques, NL. She was educated at Memorial University in St. John’s, NL and subsequently taught school for several years in Corner Brook, NL before marrying the Rev. Douglas Batten of Salmon Cove, NL. Before emigrating to the United States in 1954 she lived in various parishes of Nova Scotia for 12 years. She resided with her family in South Boston and Allston, MA before retiring to West Yarmouth, MA. After her husband’s death she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Philip Bergen, in Needham and Dedham, MA and wintered in Florida for 26 years. During her career Margaret worked at The First National Bank of Boston before retirement. She was always heavily involved in her community spending many hours serving in various capacities at St. Matthew and the Redeemer in South Boston and at St. Luke’s and St. Margaret’s in Allston, MA.
She was a great baseball enthusiast, a gracious hostess, a great friend to all who passed her way. Until the final days of her life she enjoyed puzzles, knitting for the homeless, and stayed current with the news of the day. She is survived by her two daughters, Margaret Sandler (Paul) of Upperco, MD and Susan Bergen (Philip) of Dedham, MA, her grandsons, Douglas Sandler (Tracy Chang), David Sandler (Susanne Sandler), and Timothy Bergen (Megan Glasheen) and her great grandsons, Isaac Sandler, Edward Sandler, and Nathan Sandler.
Margaret was predeceased by her brother, Edgar Pike, sister, Gladys Gillis, and brother James Pike. “Aunt Margaret” also leaves behind many loving relatives and friends. Her remains will be interred at Christ Church Memorial Garden in Needham, MA along with her husband’s.
Memorial Service will be private at a later date. We would like to thank Herta, Daph and the whole team at VNA Hospice & Palliative Care/VNACare to whom we are eternally grateful.
