Margaret Dorothy (Pike) Batten

April 5, 2021

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Margaret Dorothy (Pike) Batten on April 5th, 2021, at the age of 104 in Dedham, MA.

Margaret was born in 1916, the daughter of Bertha and John Pike of Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland, Canada. While still young she taught for 4 years in a one room school house in Port-aux-Basques, NL. She was educated at Memorial University in St. John’s, NL and subsequently taught school for several years in Corner Brook, NL before marrying the Rev. Douglas Batten of Salmon Cove, NL. Before emigrating to the United States in 1954 she lived in various parishes of Nova Scotia for 12 years. She resided with her family in South Boston and Allston, MA before retiring to West Yarmouth, MA. After her husband’s death she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Philip Bergen, in Needham and Dedham, MA and wintered in Florida for 26 years. During her career Margaret worked at The First National Bank of Boston before retirement. She was always heavily involved in her community spending many hours serving in various capacities at St. Matthew and the Redeemer in South Boston and at St. Luke’s and St. Margaret’s in Allston, MA.

She was a great baseball enthusiast, a gracious hostess, a great friend to all who passed her way. Until the final days of her life she enjoyed puzzles, knitting for the homeless, and stayed current with the news of the day. She is survived by her two daughters, Margaret Sandler (Paul) of Upperco, MD and Susan Bergen (Philip) of Dedham, MA, her grandsons, Douglas Sandler (Tracy Chang), David Sandler (Susanne Sandler), and Timothy Bergen (Megan Glasheen) and her great grandsons, Isaac Sandler, Edward Sandler, and Nathan Sandler.

Margaret was predeceased by her brother, Edgar Pike, sister, Gladys Gillis, and brother James Pike. “Aunt Margaret” also leaves behind many loving relatives and friends. Her remains will be interred at Christ Church Memorial Garden in Needham, MA along with her husband’s.

Memorial Service will be private at a later date. We would like to thank Herta, Daph and the whole team at VNA Hospice & Palliative Care/VNACare to whom we are eternally grateful.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Greater Boston Food Bank www.gbfb.org or to VNA Hospice & Palliative Care/VNACare www.vnacare.org.

Margaret and Susan,
So sorry to hear of your mother's passing - (my BJMH )connection.) My cousin Nora (Pike) always spoke so fondly of Aunt Margaret. I can vaguely remember her living with my family in Cartyville when she taught in McKays c.1941.. I have a pic of her taken at that time - - in fact I am named after her.
With sympathy and prayers,

Muriel Margaret (Hulan) Chislett

My thoughts and prayers are with you Margret and Susan, as you endure the loss of your Mom. As a young girl It was my privilege to have lived nearly next door to the rectory in South Boston. Mrs Batton welcomed me to the home many times so Susan, Margret ,and I could play. Mrs Batton always had a treat for a snack for us, but not too close to dinner. Girls please accept my heartfelt condolences during this time of loss.
