Margaret Cabot Obituary

Margaret Freeman Cabot, 73, of Dedham, Massachusetts, died on June 3, 2025. Born on November 3, 1951, in Princeton, NJ, she was the daughter of John Leiper Freeman, Jr. and Ann Cochran Nooner. She is also predeceased by her brothers, John L. Freeman III and Peter R. Freeman.

Meg spent most of her childhood in Philadelphia, where she attended the Germantown Friends School. She went on to attend Wheaton College, where she studied Political Science.

Meg married Mitchell Winslow Cabot in August 1986, and soon after they built their house in Dedham. For 30 years, Meg worked as a trust and estate administrator at Foley Hoag LLP. Following a year-long sabbatical in St. Croix, USVI, where Mitch taught at the Good Hope School, Meg transitioned to selling real estate in Dedham full time in 2009. She had a particular passion for historic houses and sat on the Dedham Historic Districts Commission for several years.

During the summer – and after retirement into the fall months – Meg and Mitch would spend as much time as they could in their beloved island community in North Haven, Maine. You could find them on beach picnics with friends and family or racing their wooden Herreshoff sailboat. Recently, her favorite role was that of “Nannie” to her grandchildren.

Meg is survived by her loving husband, Mitchell; her daughter, Phoebe MacClaren (David) of Sherborn, MA; her stepsons, Matthew Cabot (Melinda) of Biddeford, ME, and Christopher Cabot (Kai) of North Yarmouth, ME; her two grandsons (Winslow and Samuel MacClaren); and eight step grandchildren (Lucas, Eli, Saer, Dillon, Zephyr, Aria, Magnolia and Avery Cabot). She is also survived by her sisters, Suzanne Freeman of Charlottesville, VA, and Polly Lyman of Kinderhook, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Meg’s memory may be made to the North Haven (Maine) Historical Society (www.northhavenmainehistoricalsociety.org).
