Obituary

Mariano “Matt” H. Picardi of Montville, NJ and Hingham, MA passed away surrounded by love after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's Disease Saturday, September 9. Matt handled his illness with the same patience and grace that defined his life and was a joy to all around him until his final day on this earth. He was 82.

Beloved son, husband, father, grandfather and friend, Matt’s life was his acts of kindness. He was known far and wide for his loyalty, generosity, sharp intellect, and his famous Sicilian meatballs. Matt loved his family above all and did not let a day go by without letting them know. Phone calls, packages, kind words and Italian food were some of his favorite vehicles for expressing his love. Matt was happiest when he was helping someone he loved. There was no favor too big.

He was married to Jacqueline “Jaime” (Ferree), the love of his life for 53 years. A favorite story for their children and grandchildren was of the couple’s meeting in a crowded bar, when a tall, dark and handsome Matt, gallantly cleared a path through the throng for the stunning young blonde whom he would eventually marry.

A lifelong Yankees fan, Matt's passion for baseball mirrored his unwavering dedication to his loved ones. Just as he cheered for his favorite team through victory and defeat, Matt provided constant support and encouragement to his family and friends. Matt counted long evenings over the best Italian food in Manhattan and Northern New Jersey with dear friends as some of his most cherished moments. Matt's legacy as a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend will continue to inspire those who knew him, reminding us to share a smile, to cherish simple joys, and to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Matt was born in Newark, NJ to Mariano and Mary (Polito) Picardi. Though he was an only child, Matt was surrounded by cousins, aunts, and uncles who adored him. A graduate of Seton Hall Prep, Seton Hall University, and Fordham Law School, Matt was a proud and loyal alumnus. Matt enjoyed a successful and lengthy career as an attorney which began at the Essex County Prosecutor's Office before moving to New Jersey Bell, where he spent the majority of career, then ultimately his own legal practice. Service was a priority for Matt, who served in the United States Navy aboard the USS America, and volunteered tirelessly in his community, leading the Republican Club, the Knights of Columbus, and many other worthy organizations.

Matt leaves behind his loving wife, Jaime of Hingham, MA and Montville, NJ; his devoted daughters, Dana Lewis and her husband, Jonathon Lewis of Chestnut Hill, MA, and Laura Picardi and her husband, Michael Peters of Kingston, Ontario; his adoring grandchildren Ava, Tessa, and Andersen Lewis; many beloved cousins and cherished friends.

A private Mass will be held to celebrate Matt’s life at Saint Bartholomew Church in Needham, MA. In Matt’s memory, please do a kindness for someone who needs one.
