Loving Mother, Nana, Aunt, friend. Marie was known for her intelligence, her kindness and her quiet and thoughtful spirit. She was athletic and adventurous, and always up for a challenge! She was an avid reader, gardener, bridge player and knitter. Marie learned to ski at 40 and roller blade at 60; she took surfing lessons in Hawaii and back in the day, loved her moped! She loved to beat her family at games, from Uno to Scrabble to tennis and any game in between.
A lifelong learner, Marie loved to travel and often combined her trips with the opportunity to learn more about the culture of the area she visited. She and Dave enjoyed many Elderhostel trips in their retirement; the Southwest with its ancient cultures was of particular interest to her. A self-proclaimed “island hopper,” Marie loved her weeks on Nantucket and on Block Island. Block Island was an especially important place to Marie and her family. The weeks spent together found her hiking with her grandchildren, relaxing on Mansion beach, combing for shells at Andy’s Way and body surfing in the waves (no boogie boards for Marie! Once she ended up with a bloody nose from an unfortunate collision with an unsuspecting beach walker). Our memories from those family trips will last a lifetime.
Marie was born in Montclair, NJ and moved to Medfield, MA at the age of 11. She attended Dover HS and Wheaton College, where she earned her degree in Chemistry. Early in her adult life Marie worked as a chemist at Dupont, Proctor and Gamble and MIT. At Dover High School she met David Devine whom she married in 1952. They were happily married for 61 years until his death in 2013. Together they settled in Needham, where they raised their family with love and built family traditions that will last far into the future. Never one to dally, as her children reached school age, Marie rejoined the work force with jobs at Shawmut Bank and then at the local bookstore. Marie liked to stay active, and freely volunteered her time to many organizations, including Glover Hospital, the Girl Scouts and the Mass Ski Club. She also enjoyed her involvement in the Needham Garden Club and at the Needham Pool and Racquet Club.
Marie leaves four daughters: Carol (Nick Passaretti), of Warren, RI, Deb (Greg Kane) of Walpole, MA, Marcy, of Westford, MA, and Amy (Ed Buchanan), of Glenside, PA. She also leaves eight loving grandchildren: Lindsay (Jake Sullivan), Kyle, John, Sarah (Jay Dochnahl), Patty, David, Tim and Matt, as well as three adorable great grandchildren. In addition, Marie leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her greatly.
Marie spent her last several years in independent living at New Pond Village in Walpole. She was able to live out her days safely with the help of a group of caregivers who became like family. Marie and her family are so thankful for the love and care of Angella, Marie, and Doreen.
Visiting hours will be held in the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave, Needham, on Sunday, March 2nd from 4-7PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in The Church of the Most Precious Blood, Centre St, Dover on Monday March 3rd at 10am. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery, Dover.
