Martha Therrien Obituary

Martha Louise Therrien (Hastry) Age 82

Born to Stephen Joseph Hastry and Ruth Hastry (Terry) on March 13, 1930 in Quincy, Massachusetts. The family home was in Mattapan, Massachusetts. Martha was the eldest child in the family, and had 3 brothers and 1 sister, and is survived by her brother Richard Hastry of Franklin, Massachusetts, sister Carole Donovan of Dedham, Massachusetts, and her late brothers Robert Hastry of Weymouth Massachusetts and David Hastry of Milton Massachusetts. Martha had 4 children: Nancy Carroll of Marion, Massachusetts, Stephen Therrien of Framingham, Massachusetts, Mary Drew of Lovell, Maine, and Robert Therrien, of Quincy Massachusetts, son-in-laws Alf Carroll III and William Drew, and 4 very loving grandchildren, Stephanie Carroll, Alf Carroll IV, William Drew, and Tristan Drew. Martha's strong family bonds created lasting and memorable relationships with many other family members, including those from the Hastry, Donovan, Therrien, Sullivan, MacLeod, Drew, and Carroll families. All told her family is over 80 people strong and spans 3 generations.

Martha was a student at Jeremiah E. Burke High School for Girls and later became a graduate. Her future was shaped by a life-changing event that would ultimately help to define her strong personal traits which she became well known for: inner strength, independence and deep abundant pride in her family. At the mere age of 10, Martha's father died unexpectedly, requiring her to step up alongside her mother to help raise the rest of the Hastry family. Martha worked a job at Bell Telephone, where she continued to hone her strong interpersonal skills as an Operator; a job that Martha often described proudly and fondly.

Martha and Bob adopted 4 children: Mary, Robert, Nancy, and Stephen. They provided all of them an outstanding upbringing and jump-start on life, first in Quincy, then in Needham. During the Needham years, the Therrien Family set down strong roots in the local community. Although she would rather be at the beach or cottage in Manomet with her sister and their 8 kids, Martha cheerfully endured a wide variety of camping trips with the family. During her mid-life years, Martha gave much time and love to young children; she also helped to raise or watch her grandkids Billy, Tristan, Steph and Alf, plus other children in the Needham community.

Along the way, she developed a lifelong love for the color yellow, lighthouses of all sizes, shapes, and locations, and of course, anything green to let you know her pride in being Irish. She passed on her deep-rooted belief in St. Jude to her family, who carry and share it with many, many others in times of dire need. Martha also developed a latent flair for the arts; not just in song, but in painting of ocean scenes, lighthouses and flowers.

However, she always had a way to keep you guessing- answering to "Martha, Mimi, Marty, Auntie M, Mim" or the multiple middle names she used to sign documents: Louise, Ruth, Hastry and Agnes. She had as many names as she did her many "lives". Her family and caregivers used to say she had "9 Lives", but they soon increased that to "18 Lives". Yet she never complained, or wanted to have anyone worry about her.

Martha regularly noted her blessings to her dear caregivers, family, neighbors, and friends, whose lives she made happier through songs, a story, or just a kind word. Martha's life made others around her enjoy their lives more.Visiting hours at Eaton Funeral Home from 6- 8pm on July 12 1351 Highland Ave Needham Ma.
