Mary Sweet Obituary

Long time Needham resident Mary Caroline (MC) Sweet passed away September 19, 2011. MC was a graduate of Wellesley High School and in 1938, Connecticut College. After graduation she toured Europe then attended the Massachusetts College of Art.
Community service was the hallmark of MC's life. She served as Den mother and led Cub Scout training programs for both the Boston and Narraganset Councils of the Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Needham Community Council, and the Needham Historical Society. She was a member and past president of the Needham Art Association and a member of the Needham Garden Club where she drew the artwork for the annual report for the past decade. For over 20 years she and her husband hosted meetings for the widow to widow's group.
In 1985 MC and her husband Bill Sweet donated the Sweet Wildlife Sanctuary to the Town of Needham. She was recipient of the Leslie B. Cutler Community Service Award by the Needham Community Council in 1985. In 1989 she received the Agnes Berkeley Leahy Alumni Award for distinguished service from Connecticut College.
MC is preceded in death by her husbands William B. Dolan in 1960 and William L. Sweet in 2009. She is survived by her three sons, Charles W. Dolan, Laramie Wyoming, Arthur W. Dolan, Olympia Washington, and James E. Dolan, Henderson Nevada. Grandmother of Brendan E. Dolan, Eden Prairie Minnesota, Joseph G. Dolan, Laramie Wyoming, Anne Sackville-West, Medford Massachusetts and Tom Sackville-West, Olympia Washington.
A memorial service celebrating MC's life will be held Sunday October 2nd at 2:30 PM at the First Parish Unitarian-Universalist, 23 Dedham Ave, Needham. In lieu of flowers donations in MC's name may be made to the First Parish Memorial Fund.
